Chipping in....

Untill last summer i would say most of my birdies came from chip ins, playing at Tain anyway.

I used to miss the greens a lot and used a little 9 iron bump and run, i would go as so far as to say one per round at Tain if not more.

My short iron play got a lot better and miss less greens than before and you putt from off the green more at Nairn than i would say at Tain.

Are you like me? You threaten the hole probably once every round or two, sometimes it goes in, sometimes it does't :)

Had one saturday that hit the flag, hit the lip and bounced out to an inch :(

Because my GIR stats are poor my chipping from short range is pretty good, like you I regulary go close and quite often drop one in.

spent half an hour chipping with a 5 iron yesterday. a club i would very rarely use around the green. going to try and use it alot more as i was leaving everything stiff with it without breaking sweat!

A few years ago I used to chip in every couple of rounds but my short game really went off the boil for a while. Watched a Dave Pelz video that someone posted on here the other week and I've got my old chipping style back! Yesterday was the first competitive round I'd played since watching the vid and lipped out twice from about 30 feet, hit the pin once from 20 feet and holed one from about 50 feet. Happy days!

Twice so far this year. Once with a 56* from about 10 yards, which to be fair had a bit of luck behind it as I cought it thinner than planned but still rolled in. The other with a 7 iron (putting stroke) from about 25 yards. Took my time with that one, planned the landing zone, did a "pretend putt" from there, and then played the shot to it. Big thanks to Gary Alliss on teaching me that one!

I usually only get 1 or 2 a year, so I guess that's my quota! ;)

On the chipping green, at least 1 before every round. On the course, once this year so far. I'll probably get another 2 or 3

How does that %'age work out then? You chip 100 times in 3 rounds? Don't you hit any GIR's?

It measures a "No Putt" if I chip in and if I take 1 or 2 or 3 putts that number is counted.
If I chip in then I record a No putt and my no putt %age is 1%
3 putts are level at about 5% of holes, 1 putts about 30, 2 putts about 64.
So out of every 100 holes I'll chip in once so, ok, it's more like every 5 rounds - I was doing the maths in my head and without coffee that's hard......but you get the picture...

Very rare that I chip in.

I lip out and give plenty a run a the hole that just miss though.

On the other hand, I do hole more than my share of 30+ ft putts so it evens out somewhere along the line I'm sure :smirk:

Probobly about every couple of months for me. I tend to chip quite close most of the time which is another reason my putting average has dropped! I don't hit many GIR so the chip would usually be the first putt.

I can be a good chipper in practice but on the course I am just happy if the ball makes it onto the dancefloor and not duffed in front of me or hiking 30 yards through the green. Can't remember last time I chipped in

Iv had 3 in the last 8 weeks......
And all after either a crap tee shot or a bad second on a Par 4...... Also i up the stakes with a mid iron in my had when bumping and running the ball at the hole......Ill use a putting grip ,stance and swing with a 7,8,9 iron or PW......
My playing partners are kind of getting a bit annoyed at this stage....But to be honest if im around the green say maybe with a good 30 to 50 feet from the hole after missing the green im Always trying to hole it....
For me it helps to heighten my focus rather than just trying to get it close.... Ill approach to shot like i would a putt and see how the ball will role out on landing......
I see so many people reaching for a lofted wedge around the greens when there is absolutely no need to use those clubs......They try to get the ball to check up right at the hole and either blade it way past or carry it to the hole and have it run 15 feet past.....

The game can be made so much easier if you play the right shot rather than a flamboyant one....
