My daughter is 17 in May and Granny has donated her old Y reg Peugeot 205 to the cause. Worth about £800

i would like to know approx how much i will need to shell out for insurance so I have phoned for some quotes asking them to take today as her 17th birthday, 3rd party fire/theft under 5000 miles etc

Quotes around the £1900 mark WTF

Have any of you found anywhere that does reasonable rates for your kids?

My daughter is 17 next August. God i am not looking forward to that. Told her to look at insurance group 1 cars only, which hit her idea of an Alfa on the head ;)

found TESCO car ins really good....

My brother-in-laws car has just been written-off allegedly.

Tesco deducted £500 or so from his proposed payout for storage chargers the assessment company charged them.

He rang the company in question who said they dont charge storage to the insurance companies.

Therefore tescos are lying scum, they even admitted in writing that they had added storage that they were never charged.

As it happens I told him to tell tescos to jog-on, it was never a write-off in my eyes, I have got his car being repaired this week and tesco are paying and waiving the excess for being shysters.

Wait till she passes - cost will spike again.

On the named driver front, be careful
Insurance companies are getting wise to this. If Ally is the main user but you're the named main user and there's a crunch, the Insurance Co will look at the car carefully. If they find Lady GaGa cd's, pink fluffy things and general girlie bits'n'pieces, they'll declare Ally the Main Driver and cancel the insurance.

Unless of course you have these things in your car and you're not telling us something.........

I went through all this with my Son, think yourself lucky you have a girl! £1900 seems a lot, but it will certainly be substantially more for a 17 year old lad.

I know from experience that Insurance companies do not like parents putting children on their insurance.
Personally I think it far better for kids to have insurance in their own right. The sooner they do this, the no claims discount will build up and by the time they reach 25 will have 7 years worth, assuming no accidents of course.

Its cost my step son who is 20 and just passed £3k for a 1.2 old Corsa!!!

I am currently taking lessons and 35 and was just checking what cars and insurance for the future and for a 2004 1.4s golf its just short of £16k once I pass.

Might be stating the obvious, but have you tried any of the comparison sites?

Normally this is a good start, as all the different companies have different risk profiles. You'll get the best quote from the company that has space in its profile for a 17 year old girl, but once this company has its quota they'll give you silly high quotes, to either scare you away or laugh as they take your money.

Also sounds counter intuitive, but look at fully comp. Normally works out better, because most of the people taking out 3rd party are a higher risk profile than people who go fully comp, so they get higher premiums.

Apologies if I am stating the obvious!

My little brother passed his test about a month ago.

My dad bought him a little saxo 1.1L (about £600) and little brother has paid for his own insurance... which came to £2600 (20 with No ncb). Which both my parents and I thought was daylight robbery...

It took him 4 days to do this to it-

Driving to work at 5.30am, he entered a roundabout a little too quickly for the conditions, car snap oversteered onto the kerb and hit/rubbed down a fence post. He was driving below the speed limit and sensibly. lack of talent/skill/experience (what ever you want to call it) is all that made it happen
He went out the next day and bought himself a little fiesta from the auctions. I now realize why insurance is so so expensive for youngsters. Confidence doesn't make up for experience. Insurance should be expensive

I agree with most posts, but the point about adding them to your insurance is sound - they have an accident and the insurers find that its their car and are the main driver then you will lose your no claims and they might not pay out as you have given false information. When my son first got insurance we just had to grin and bare it and help him until he got some NCB.

There is no wonder why so many youngsters drive around with no insurance. It is cheaper to run the risk of a fine of a couple of hundred quid than it is to insure a car that's worth less than the premium being charged.

I was talking to my driving instructor at the weekend about this, the point really is that young new drivers who just pass their test think they can drive, it takes a couple of years experience to be a driver and so in that two years you are still constantly learning. There sound be more restrictions on young drivers i.e. No driving between 11pm - 5am, engine size limits and something saying legally they are new drivers like the green P.

Mostly the cost of insurance is the fact that half of Bradford have annual whiplash claims paying out 4k+ each, I have talked about this with lots of the people who do this and it makes me sick, once their last claim payment is received they are looking for the next one.

Most of the youngsters at my golf club who are in their first 2 years of driving have had multiple cars written off. Insurance should be high. Talking to them, they don't seem to take any responsibility for accidents, and just view them as an occupational hazard of driving.
