Captain's Drive In

It is our Captain's Drive in next week. Sometimes it is free but he has decided to charge £10 to include pie and peas and the balance going to the Captain's Charities.

There is room for 84 people but it is only just over half full possibly because of the cost. The week after there is a Memorial Comp which is free and fully subscribed.

What are your views on a Drive In re a freebie;would you support for £10 and what happens at your club please?

played in my first captain's drive in comp yesterday shotgun start matchplay it was £7 with steak and mushroom pie and chips. 62 people turned up
i think every member shud turn up show bit of respect

it's our captains drive in today,what happens at our club is you put your name down and they make 2 teams that are pulled out of a hat, the captains team v the vice captains team with a shotgun start and the losing team buys dinner for the winners,all the places are taken up very early which is why i've missed out this year i didn't get my name down quick enough, it is always a great day though with no complaints

We have a Captains v's Vice Captains Match next Saturday. It's a Shotgun start and more of a social thing really with a good bit of banter and a chance to play golf with folks you might not otherwise play with.

Our ladies have a Captains Day later in the year that is a charity fundraiser.

I've never liked the idea of forcing people to give to a Captain's Charity. At my last club, the Captain wanted to introduce a 50p surcharge on each competition entry to go towards his Charity. I said that wasn't fair - a lot of people give plenty of money to Charity but it's their choice which and how much. We ended up falling out over the issue.
Have things like 50p if you go in a pond or a ditch or whatever but still make it voluntary.

Shouldn't the cost of the Captain's Drive-in be part of the cost of being the Captain in the first place? I don't know I've never been a Captain but I would expect it to part of the job.

Ours was today - well supported with 98 turning out! £3 entry going towards prizes. Money is made for charity on the actual drive in itself - we bet on where the shot will land men's & women's captain. Made just short of £300.

Got a charity bunker for the first time this year & there will be loads of other fundraising throughout the year.

Think £10 as a sort of mandatory donation is way too much. I thought the drive in was about the ceremony of taking office. With ours, the mens and ladies captain drive in and we have a mixed scramble afterwards. Always fully booked. If he wanted to raise money, a charge on Captains Day would be more appropriate or even add another comp into the schedule and use the entry fees from that

Homer I agrre with £10 but it does include pie and peas which will probably cost £5.

However I take your point along with the others. Money is tight unless Red Nose Day!

We don't have a comp for it.

New Year's day, all the Captains for the year and the Pro drive off the first. Normally about 50 or 60 turn up (depending on popularity obv) and the captain buys drinks and there is some food laid on afterwards.

Just the token event for starting their year.
