Just been to a Callaway demo day up at my club and think I may have bought a new driver!

I wasn't really in the market for one as I just wanted to have a nose around but tried the new FT-iz, the FT-9, the Diablo Edge and the Diablo Edge Tour with drivers, fairway woods and hybrids.

All quite impressive. In particular, the FT-iz hybrids were phenomenal. So easy to hit, I don't really need one but was quite tempted anyway. I was almost tempted to get the 2 and sack my 3 wood, it was that good.

Back to the drivers, I hit quite a few with my G2 driver and the comments were that the ball flight was quite high and I was a little erratic. All perfectly normal for me. So it was time to test drive.

After hitting loads of balls and comparing them against my G2, I decided I liked the Diablo Edge Tour best so I was then experimenting with shafts.

The (very helpful) guy from Callaway wouldn't tell me and asked me not to look at the shaft just to make up my mind with how it felt and how it flew. The Grafalloy Pro Launch Blue was the one that worked best. I was extremely surprised that I ended up with a regular shaft rather than a stiff one.

I then went over to the first tee and hit some on my own to compare. I absolutely melted my G2 up the middle and took that one as the one to beat.

Several balls later, I found the Diablo Edge Tour didn't really go much further than my G2 (around 10 yards at best but most average ones were up there with my Sunday G2 best) but I was soooo much more accurate with it which is what tempted me. Didn't miss the fairway once even with a couple of dodgy swings.

I really liked the trajectory too, it was a much lower and more penetrating flight. Come the summer time, I think you'd get some great roll on our bouncy fairways. So, I'm just waiting on the Pro to give me a price and I think I'll take it!

I'm pretty surprised you got a low penetrating flight with that shaft. It is a high launch shaft.I had it in a regular flex with my Ping G5 and I loved it.The only problem was that because it was a high launch shaft it was useless into the wind, and ultimately that is why I got rid of it.

Normally at demo days, Cally have a launch monitor and will compare your driver stats with the model you choose and work on finding a club and shaft to suit. Not a true custom fitting but a bit more scientific than allowing you to just hit balls.

Looking at going to a Cally demo day in Oxford on saturday - might just give these a look. They certainly look a bit better than the last few Cally offerings

The launch monitor was broken so the only way to tell was by hitting balls. That suited me after some varied results using launch monitors and being able to hit up the 1st is a pretty good too.

They do have some nice gear. The guy was putting the FT-iz hybrid in bloody great divots and I still couldn't fail to hit it straight and long.

They were also throwing in a goody bag with towel, balls, hat, tees etc in for any orders on the day too.
