Can you have massive population growth without massive pressures on public services like the NHS and Education. Why do we only hear of the aging population being the problem with the NHS with no mention of population growth fueled by mass immigration. Wait a minute, that would be racist to blame immigration and the effect it has on the birth rate, better to blame it all on our old people.

It's a combination of both.

In terms of immigration, with an average net addition of 250k people per year for the last umpteen years that is bound to impact as we are not extending schools or hospitals at the same rate. We are trying to fit a pint into a 3/4 pint pot. Not a hard one to work out.

Should couples be discouraged to have more than 2 children?
I had the snip after we had our second child. We made a conscious decision that 2 was enough and that any more would be a financial burden that would last the rest of our lives. We’re super happy with that bit of foresight.

People are living too long these days and too many people (like me) are attracts to the uk because you have a great standard of living. Lucky me

Lucky us eh?:thup::whoo::smirk:

Maybe inadequate healthcare and education is the natural defense against excess population growth ;)

Good point. We need to stop fighting against obesity and bring back sexy branding to smoking, along with reducing the tax on fags. Let natural selection run its course :D

I imagine many parts of the country have found themselves under pressure overnight when it comes to Schools and Doctors surgery's.

local to me there is a Doctors that services a smallish part of Inverness. There is a housing estate close by, most of the houses have been sold in the RTB scheme. this includes a couple of 3 story blocks of flats, which on the whole were inhabited by single people and the odd old couple. almost overnight the there were lots of Eastern European families moving in ( all working) and the demand for the Doc and local schools trebled. there are two Teachers who live at the end of my road. both told me the classes on the whole were quite small, now all fit to bursting. Same with the docs. you could get an appointment same or next day, now its 3 weeks before one is available.

Scotland needs immigration as it has a declining population, esp young people. One the whole Local and national Gov were caught out by the 2nd lot of Eastern European countries that joined the EU and and many coming to work here has had a knock on effect to a certain extent

Just imagine the benefits of a falling population

No need to build new housing/roads/schools/hospitals etc
No queues at the post office/dentist/doctors etc

Operation sir? Certainly, how about this Friday, am or pm?

And the roads............

I say Jeremy Hunt on the news last night being questioned about the problems with the NHS being unable to cope with demand and he blamed it solely on the Aging population. Of course this is a big factor but IMO so is population growth due to immigration. Why didn't he mention it?

Surely it is more a case of bad planning, rather than blaming the old, or immigrants, or any other group.

This is largely true. We knew the population was ageing, it is not a surprise. We have also seen the immigration figures over the last 10-15 years so the increase in numbers there is no surprise. If govt had the figures why do they not act or act quicker?
