Builder/Structural engg question...

My understanding is that Windows cannot be structural and need lintels on top of it to take the load. Looking at a property and upstairs windows seem to be flush with the ceiling joists. Is this odd?



The house has stood there for 50 odd years and the windows were changed to double glazing about 10 years ago. I believe the roof is held up by A-frames but cant confirm.

The windows in my house do not have lintels above them, nor does the patio door. The guys who came and replaced the patio doors when we moved in nearly papped when they took the old doors out, as the potential for the wall to drop was quite high. Never seen two blokes work so fast.

All the houses on my estate are the same, no lintel, just a soldier course.

Cant see a soldier course either... the windows look flush with the soffits..

It could be that the wall plate runs directly over the window, so there will not be a lintel. My house is like this.
