breaking in new clubs

I have just bought myself some mizuno JPX 800 irons and have played with them 3 times, used then at the range and still don't feel Ive played a good shot yet. I was using taylormade rac os irons before and they were easier to use for me. How long is it before you would feel comfortable with new kit? I have not been playing well lately so new clubs and playing bad is starting to frustrate me.

Did you try before you bought or did you just get them because they were;

a) a good price.
b) looked good.
c) other.

I tried them before i bought them. I think its because i am playing bad and looking for something to blame.

Did you get these off the peg or were you fitted? The biggest problem I've had with new clubs especially off the peg is trying way too hard with them. The swing gets longer and quicker and has more and more moving parts. The net result is the ball goes wider and wider and not as far.

I've always found that with C/F clubs I am happy they've been set up for me and that gives me an immediate feeling of confidence. That said my TM TP's were an impulse buy but were a silly price and so nothing ventured and they've been a great success. On the other side, I had some R9's when they first came out (well two weeks before they were released) off the peg and I couldn't get on with them.

My advice would be to go to the range, swing easily and relax.

I got some i15's at the begining of the year and never got used to them. Had a proper fitting and hit them well but once I got them on the course they were horrible. Changed them for Mizzy MP58's and I havn't looked back.
Worth getting the guy that fitted you checking that the specs are correct.

They were custom fitted for me slightly as I hit a ball against a white screen they were made 2 degree upright as I kept striking the ball on the toe of the club face, they were regular shaft as my swing speed was 80 to 85mph with 7 iron. The bloke gave me a tip to widen my stance and bring my hands more in front of the ball when striking, i took his advice and went range with my old clubs and my ball striking had improved but on the course it has been poor. Going to go the range a few times this week and work on my game, other than that irons look nice and feel nice just cant use them.

I gather it's not an uncommon experience and stories like this made me keep my last set of irons for 13 years! I was simply afraid to change.

You say they look nice and feel nice which is a good start. Maybe subconsciously you're trying a bit too hard cos they're new and you want them to perform. As has been said, take it easy, give it some time and see what happens.

I was custom fitted for some MP52's back in March, and it's only now that I am starting to hit them consistently well. If you've had your previous set for some time, as I had, then you won't be hitting new ones as well overnight.

Play outstanding with the the first 9 holes you play with them then completely go to pot!

Needless to say, I'm looking forward to getting to know my new irons over the winter. (until I thin a three iron and destroy my hands! )

I was fitted in May(ish) and only in the last three or so rounds have I felt totally comfortable. Patience is the key!

I was custom fitted for a set of Mizuno MX200's and couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo with them. Bloody useless and I felt like lobbing them in the nearest pond.
Ended up selling them after a year and bought a set of i15's "off the peg" in April of this year.
First time out with 'em I had 37 points with a blob!
