Boxing/UFC 2018-26

Say what you want about McGregor, but he basically made the UFC.
No one could promote/sell a fight like him, even in boxing.
I’d say he elevated it. Absolute marketers dream. You only need to look at buy rates across boxing and UFC. There’s no doubting he was the biggest draw in combat sports. Probably alongside Mayweather - but he benefitted from worldwide popular opponents like Pacquiao, Canelo and De La Hoya.

Crazy to think that the 2nd biggest ppv in boxing was Conor v mayweather.
Let’s be honest,it was an exhibition.
Not a chance McGregor beats mayweather at boxing.
Put them in the octagon with mma rules & it’s over in the first round.

True - boxers don’t transition well to MMA. Notable exception was Mercer knocking out Sylvia. But that was within 10 seconds.

Just has a look at the odds for Pimblett and Gaethje. Not sure how Pimblett is the strong favourite.

gaethje is knocking on a bid now.
In his prime he’d be favourite.

It’s just odd to me. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like Pimblett to win. However, Its hard to compare the respective level of opposition, including when they’ve fought the same people. The Ferguson and Chandler Pimblett fought were not operating at the same level as when they faced Gaethje. Just on experience, Gaethje should be favourite.

Good fight with the correct result. Power was the difference. Pimblett showed good durability. But for the first time in the UFC, he probably got his game plan wrong. I thought he fought to Gaethje’s strengths, rather impose his own.

Pimblett did showcase enough to show he is relevant at the top of the lightweight division. But because of the interim status, I’m guessing it will be a bit of a rebuilding job rather than a rematch.

Well you called it 👍🏻

I thought Paddy would get the win, more than happy to be wrong tho.

Just got round to watching Gaethje v Paddy.
I can’t stand paddy, but fair play to him,he’s got a chin on him.
But not sure about his fight IQ,standing up & banging with Gaethje is suicide.
Why didn’t he take it to the floor? 🤯

Yep daft. Fought his opponents type of fight. Fight IQ/game plan is normally a strength but him and his camp got that wrong massively.

Some of them eye pokes were naughty like. Glad he didn’t make anything of them and they didn’t cause an injury. They need to sort the gloves out.

Think they looked at the gloves, but said fingers need to be free for grappling.
Surely it’s not hard to not poke someone in the eye.
As for game plan, you don’t stand and bang with Gaethje,Poirier or Holloway.
This loss probably sets paddy back a year for a potential title shot.

Watched a video on option they’re considering including a curved version that still allows fingers to be free for grappling and removal of the stubby finger separators that might cause some of the issues.

Yeah and rightly so for me. If you win the interim belt, you should fight for the real belt.

That’s what I like about the UFC,the fights that should happen, more often than not happen.
Unlike boxing, obviously it’s more difficult in boxing for various reasons.
But still very annoying.

I do feel UFC has gone a bit stale tho.
Not many potential fights excite me at the minute.

Feel like it exploded when you had Conor v Diaz, Garbrandt v Dillashaw, Jones v Cormier……

As for eye pokes,I reckon quite a few do it deliberately.
Aspinall actually got booed because he got eye poked & the fight was stopped 🤯
When you saw the replays it seemed to go knuckle deep 😨

Yeah the Aspinall eye pokes were horrendous. The negativity he got for not fighting on was a joke. Jon Jones has loads of form for deliberate eye pokes.

There is a lack of marquee type fights to make compared to 5-10-15 years ago. It needs a few more superstars to capture the imagination.
