Boat Race

The day I get angry and worked up about the boat race being on the BBC is the day I realise I really do need to get a life and get out more.

Played my round of golf at dukes Meadows, had a burger, watched the start on TV, went down to the river with a minute to spare, watch them go by, then back at the course for the last group to finish up.

Never seen the race live before, but they were shifting it. Living at the Thames I see rowers all the time, but these guys are on a different level. When they went past I didn't really notice it at 1st, but when the flotilla followed the Oxford boat you could see how fast they were all going.

I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it, but being 50m away from the golf car park I might as well have a glance.

Used to go to a boat race party with some friends, in a flat in putney, over looking the finish. They get a real shift on at the end. Good excuse for a few beers as far as I was concerned.

More people watch the boat race than watch golf events - I suspect rowing fans prob look at a golf and think - people really watch that ?

Seems the BBC can’t do right from wrong - slated for not showing commitment to sport then slated for showing an event that’s watched by over 7 mil each year

And Claire Balding for me is the best sports presenter on telly - just superb

I have no problem with the bbc showing it, although i find it amusing that "we" hear so much about golf being elitist and yet adore this race. Lets be honest though, it's a one off event that probably costs the bbc peanuts in comparison to the market share it attains due to it. If it suddenly cost them millions i'm sure it would be dropped.

In regards the 7m watching it, its a bit like the Grand National. How many watch that, that couldn't even tell you where the race is run? Free to air will obviously always garner greater viewing figures, that doesn't mean its more popular by default.
