As a young teenager I played a bit of golf. Mostly on day tickets to local courses in Ireland and also on a little 9-hole par three course where I picked up the rudiments and had attained a reasonable level of proficiency. Not brilliant or indeed in possession of an official handicap, but I was a comfortable 22ish society player I'd guess.

In my mid-teens I got a guitar and there then followed many years when that was all I did. It was a crazy rock and roll existence playing in some bands to semi-pro touring level and really loved every minute of it. I still had the odd game of golf, but mostly through corporate golf events at a rate of maybe no more than 1 or 2 per year; nothing more than that. The swing was getting rusty as time passed by.

So then, came a day, when playing at the Tesco Golf Day as a guest (I think it may have been at Welwyn Garden City or perhaps somewhere like Hoddesdon?, but the passing of the years and the shame of the day has made me forget the actual facts) I stood in front of a reasonable group of fellow hackers about to tee off.

I didn't feel particularly nervous thinking - so there's a crowd but it's not a biggie. It's not as if I'm going to miss the ball. I can handle this - I was a bit wayward with a driver always cutting them right so never used one, but I had a persimmon 3-wood that I loved and this was always my weapon of choice on the tee.

In due course I was announced by the mush officiating on the tee and I then teed my ball up. It was probably a Penfold Commando or perhaps a Top Flite 2000, even then I had aspirations towards the big time, and silence descended. I swished the air and addressed the ball.

It's all a bit of a blur after that but without a word of a lie the upshot of my first stroke was that I completely missed the ball!! Honestly, I did. The silence became deafening and I felt my face beginning to burn bright red. I swung again in a total daze and this time made contact sending a reasonable shot up the fairway.

However the damage had been done and I trudged up the first wishing the ground would open up and swallow me. I wasn't a serious golfer back then but even now I turn cold at the memory. I've thankfully never done it again and would never want to.

So that's my true story. Have you ever done the same or maybe you have an even worse tale to tell?

Nothing sums up true rock and roll as going on Corporate golf days! ;)

Haha

Plenty have done similar or worse. Search for Timgolfy and his 1st tee exploits at a forum meet on here!!!!

PS Done well to have been at Hoddesdon, pretty sure theres never been a golf course there. Welwyn definitely possible, Ware or Cheshunt (where Tescos are/were) too

Few years ago I was a guest of the Captain at Royal Lytham and had been looking forward to playing such a decent track. First is a tough par 3, no need to be particularly nervous but managed to toe end a 5 iron at almost right angles to where I was aiming straight into the trees never to be seen again. Gutted.

I once managed to plug the opening drive of a 4 day golf weekend into the ground about 2" in front of the tee - in front of all 31 of my fellow golfers  I eben looked down the fairway after it. It wasn't the worst tee shot of weekend though so it was quickly forgotten.

Yep, picked up a golf club at the age of 7 and liked to play, but where we lived nearest course was 8 miles away n only 2 buses ran, early morning late at night. Got to 17 and got a job in a guitar music shop, An avid rock fan myself it was right up my street.

I learnt to play I bought 2 Kramers (painted Barretta, and White Imperial) and an ESP body n neck put together, going thru a Rexter wireless system into ADA MP1 PreAmp into an Alesis quadraverb, roctron exciter hush and powered 50w stereo power amp and 2 2x12s custom built speakers, I also got a 1976 Marshall 50w master vol. the sound was awesome, got into a band played a few gigs then left them and went touring as a roadie with my best mates band signed to iron maidens management.

They supported Wolfsbane for 2 weeks(just mad) Dream Theatre, wasp, thunder all over a period of 2yrs then they got ditched, so I wasn't doing any band thing at that time and needed to do something I picked up my clubs and started to play again and it's been golf ever since 1994 ish.

Still got got all my gear but hardly play nowadays. I'd love a nice Les Paul.

Had a mate with a Kramer bass in a band I was in. Ali neck ending in two prongs. Odd looking thing.

Swerved going for an audition for Iron Maiden as didn't fancy it. Boy was I wrong that day and our Prog band peed Fish off before he was known by putting him off travelling down from Scotland because we didn't want him to travel such a long way when we weren't ready to gig etc.

In my day I've had Strats, Teles, Les Paul's and currently still have my original Strat and a PRS.
