It can't be me, surely ?

I think it was Smiffy a few weeks ago who suggested I tried Waterhall GC for a friendly round after work on a Friday with a couple of occasional players from work.

Cheers mate, got me like a kipper, there.

Wide fairways he said. True. But stray off them and the rough is as punishing as you need on a much tougher course. The wind wasn't high, but could make 2 or 3 clubs difference on many of the holes. Lost 4 balls through either pure bad shots, or half decent shots taken by the 'breeze'

But two things really chewed me up and spat me out.

One

The length. It was only 5500 yards. So why then did my legs feel like they'd walked a marathon ? Has to be the most knacked I've felt, even allowing for the fact I've not managed many full rounds. Some of them hills were unbelievable.
Take the 9th for example. 233 yds par 3. Ok, but it's 230 that the ball has to go, us golfers have to walk 200 yards down into the valley, then up the other side another 200 yards. And it was that steep I was regreting not having any crampons with me.

And two

The greens. For a course on the South Downs they were sloooow. No complaints about how true they were. Although they could do with a bit of tlc, it is a cheapo muni, so a few blemishes were to be expected. But on the back 9 I couldn't reach the hole. Obviously that has to go down to me for not being a good enough putter, but I ended up hitting the damned ball so hard I had no control over length at all. Either 6 feet short, or 8 feet long. Could not lag one for a million quid. 24 putts on the way back, alone ( just the one 4 putt in with that lot :o ).

Overall, what can I say ? The course beat me. Nigh on humiliated me, tbh. My legs are still throbbing now. Yes it was cheap, yes I enjoyed it in some kind of masochistic way. But I can't see me rushing back.

Anyone think I've got it wrong ?

I never said it was "easy"... :o :o

That back 9 in particular is a bit leggy, but overall not too bad. I've played worse!
I haven't played there for years. Last time I played the greens weren't too bad. Worse thing I found about the course were the bloody rabbit holes everywhere, and their little "currants" all over the greens.
Greens themselves were pretty nippy if I remember correctly.
If you fancy a slightly "gentler" course, go and play Lewes. It's not a municipal, but is relatively cheap, and they do take two for one vouchers.
The greens there are super slick
;)

The way I feel this morning, 'gentler' is top of my list of requirements.

I thought Eastbourne Downs was hilly, but a few rounds and I could get round it without puffin like a billy goat. But this was 10 times worse, and without the extra quality of being so well kept.

Fantastic value for a twilight at under £9, but for a full round at £13.50 ish, dunno. Not the course's fault like I said, but mentally and physically I fell apart after the 9th.

Walking 18 holes with a full carry bag is seeming a lot tougher than I remember it. This morning my legs, arms and back, are definately not up to scratch.

:o :o

PS

Bloody South Downs. Makes me wonder why I ever moved down from Sunny Croydon, sometimes. Nice parkland course all over the place. Nice FLAT parkland courses, that is.

'Leggy' he says

'I've played worse' he says.

Tell me if Chartham is one of them, and I'll book a personal trainer now.

:(

Wouldn't be so rude... ;)

Seriously, Chartham Park is a doddle. No real hard walking apart from the trek from the 5th green to the 6th tee which is not too long but a bit steep. Other than that it's on fairly level ground.
Promise
:o

Put me down for a straight 36 points then, ok

Oh yeah, I forgot about the water - if it's not one thing, it's another, eh ?

Best make that 24 then.
