Hi all

Does anyone have experience in playing with black coloured irons (or wedges)

Are there any negatives or issues with black v chrome/steel

Ian

I have Cleveland CG16, Black Pearl irons. I love the black look. Mine have not deteriorated at all and still look good. Perhaps if I played more the black would wear off but so far so good. Other makes may wear more, I don't know about that.

I'd happily chose black irons over chrome but it is very much a personal choice.

Yeah I play with black raw vokeys. Just like the look of them and it's just preference really, if titleist made irons with a black finish I'd be in the queue for them too as I really like the look. Used to have a set of cleveland irons in gunmetal grey, they were the dogs.

The black finish wears off, at least it does on my CG wedges.

my Mizuno MP10 wedges were black 6 years ago when i first got them new, now a sort of rusty brown color and have been most of that time. Don't mind it TBH.

Not really on the irons, does slightly on the clubface but not much. The vokeys it does wear off as this is a raw finish. Reduces glare in sunlight though On the wedges, this is the reason most tour pros play raw wedges

I've got Cleveland CG7s in black pearl.

It wears off but I like the look both new and worn.

I use the range a fair bit so that has taken quite a bit off the bottom of the clubs, but they don't look tatty, just used.

I certainly wouldn't be put off in the future.

Edit: I've had them about 5 years now

I'd think they'll start to wear and go shiny like my blue Mizuno wedges have, but only on the bounce/sole.

It's something you get used to.
What I dislike it that, when the face does start to wear, the club begins to look different to others.
They also can start to look tatty
I had a Cleveland wedge with a bronze finish.
It looked about 20 years old after a week..!
And, personally, I don't like looking down on tatty clubs....
Some definitely wear quicker than others

I've had a black Vokey SM5 wedge for quite a while now and no signs of the black wearing off. Wouldn't buy black irons I don't think, and don't think I'd buy another black wedge but that's personal preference, definitely nothing wrong with the black.

Same here with SM6's
But mine are starting to fade and show signs but I prefer them to chrome now.
I clean them fairly often to keep grooves sharp.

Titleist/Vokey do put a label on them saying the colour will wear off and it may/will rust.
But I remember having a Cleveland that you stuck in a bucket to accelerate the rusty look.
And Snake Eyes used to have a club called Rusty.
