I'm looking at getting a bike so that I can go for rides with my son.
Not wanting to spend too much (£250 max) so will probably be looking at 2nd hand,so that I'll get more for my money.
Any advice on what to look for would be appreciated as I'm pretty clueless when it comes to bikes.
Thanks.

What type are you thinking....road/hybrid/off road?

Sounds like a cyclocross would do the job, basically a road bike with off road tyres. Cyclists can be real equipment junkies and will often change bikes every couple of years. You can pick up some great bargains on the bay. Decent brands that do good entry level bikes are Giant, Cannondale and Specialized. You might need to stretch your budget a bit but here is an example

Cheers mate 👍

Bit like location location location, there are the this is what I am looking for but the " out of the box " choice could well be "Aldi" . They have a cycling sale on and some of the stuff looks very good. They sell a 20" bike for peanuts. but not sure of the quality, and don't know age of young pin seeker.
That aside have a look online at some of there cycling stuff anyway if your a cycling geek.

Decathlon bikes are extremely good value

Cyclo cross bikes take a bit of getting used to, and cost a packet. You might be better off with a hybrid / mountain bike with tyres that you can use both on road and trails

I would second the Decathlon bikes. Very good at that entry point, good reputation as well. I haven't seen the Aldi stuff but there is a real risk of it being a BSO (Bike Shaped Object) that ends up putting you off cycling because it's so clunky/heavy/breaks down
