2 years off yet but the wife and I are both 50 and looking at going somewhere special. Never been to any Caribbean islands or Mexico. Looking at various options but wondered where people have been that would stand out as potential places?

Wife likes the thought of totally chilling, beach optional, nice food, special feeling of the place and with the odd day trip. I'm easy 🤣

We normally go to a beautiful small Crete village so this will be the opposite but wanted to celebrate our 50ths in style/luxury

Bit difficult to bother answering if you don't care and she is happy doing nothing most of the time :D

What do you both consider special?
What is the "opposite" to a Crete village?
What food to you like?
What temperature do you like?
What kind of people/what number of people do you like to be around?

US Virgin islands are up there with the most beautiful place I've ever been.

Yes, it's kinda random isn't it.

Opposite being an all inclusive massive resort, multiple pools, big rooms etc is the image I kind of have from hearing and doing a bit of research so far.

Weather - hot.

Food - this is the slightly difficult one as I have a nut allergy which is why we probably wouldn't visit Thailand/India/Asia as the food tends to include nuts/peanuts.

That makes it more specific (y)

Maybe consider a cruise so you get all the sunny all-inclusive aspects but you still get to visit a few different places along the way instead of seeing nothing really of the actual country you're in?

I'm a year and a bit away from 60, which will also be my 40 th wedding anniversary.
Theres a distinct chance we may go Stateside, with a visit to Pearl Harbour and Alcatraz on the agenda.

In the Caribbean...

Anitgua is nice...very friendly, easy relaxed outlook...can kick back your heels and enjoy the sun or explore the island...its not too big...car hire is easy so in a couple of days you could explore most of the islands sightseeing high points whilst still leaving time a relax.

Aruba is also nice...a touch of old Dutch Colonialism and an island of two distinct halves...the south/west facing coast being pretty much a beach lovers paradise, whilst the north east facing coastline is wild, rugged and rocky.

So personal and individual taste this sort of thing.

My wife will tell you that her favouritist sort of place is small but luxury ‘boutique’ places - and as a treat we are going to one for a couple of night in Feb.

After a few nights in Marrakesh with four other couples, just the two of us have 2 nights in a most gorgeous kasbah in the foothills of the High Atlas. It is small and luxurious and all by itself next to a berber village - with fabulous view up into the high peaks.

It has none of the facilities of a big luxury resort hotel - though it has an outdoor pool and a hammam - and just its own restaurant dishing up Moroccan food. And there is nothing around but the village and walks in the valley it’s in. We’ve been before 12 yrs ago and it’s my Mrs’ very special place.

Mexico, all inclusive resort on the coast. Up to nine restaurants offering a wide choice of food, plenty of cocktails on the beach, day trips if required, my idea of bliss.

I've done all inclusive to Mexico and the Dominican Republic many times. Great beaches, good food and the option to do absolutely nothing still appeals although there are plenty of day trips available if you can be bothered.

I'd go for a cruise around the Caribbean personally

Mrs d and I have cruised a lot over many years but unfortunately I think that there are no cruises now that aren't going to end with a great number of passengers getting covid. We've recently done 3 cruises in the last couple of years and covid has been rife on 2 of them.

Perhaps out of left field but what about one of the luxury hotels in Palma Old Town.

They’re only turning 50, not 70. 😜

A mate of mine has been to St. Lucia several times. He and his wife love it.

Love the thought of a cruise, I've been on 1 and booked on the Disney one for next year

Best of all worlds

Nice living on the ship and then different destinations every day
