As far as I am concerned the government has just had £750 million out of my pension fund. ( with a lot more to follow), So pay for it outta that. Consider it a gift from Tashyboy and fellow mining pals. That way it doesn't cost the taxpayer a penny. Then everyone's cushty.
with the other £710 mill. Well.
Suggestions on a postcard to George Osborne 11 Downing st London village.

I'm amazed we still actually own it, we've sold almost everything else

Sell it to the yanks and let them repair it, sold as seen

It needs repairing, so repair it.

History is important. Once it's gone, it's gone. Replace Big Ben, knock down Parliament, replace it all with a tower block, flatten Buck house and replace with a multi storey car park, build over Regent's Park, etc. It can all be justified, but it leaves us with nothing.

This is a great view. Like it or lump it, Big Ben and The Elizabeth Tower (as it's now known) and indeed the Houses of Parliament are part of our heritage. Who are we to decide that the legacy of something that is recognised throughout the world stops here? In fact, never mind the rest of the world or the tourism stakes, it's ours and it needs to be looked after. It's one of the buildings that's at the heart of how Britain became Britain.

Last two posts sum it up

We need to protect our history not replace it

Ideally what I'd like to see is the House of Lords abolished, a new House of Commons built away from London that's actually fit for the purpose of governance and the Palace of Westminster refurbished and kept as a public monument.

It's the expensive option, but it's an investment with noble and national goals. It would create more jobs, have wider reach and may even be less expensive than trying to refurbish the palace whilst running government there at the same time.

I loved our church bells every Sunday morning but then I started thinking that our church bells were loud for a very small 'belltower' and how did they fit in? I was subsequently told that all there was in the 'belltower' was a loudspeaker and that the bells every Sunday morning were a tape recording. And so to tourists and Big Ben.

Why not comment on the post sensibly rather than voice extreme opinions?

Nobody said knock it down, my point is that when it was made materials etc were different so rather than continually repair, replace the clock mechanism with something more modern and protect the original parts by putting them in a museum on display.

Sometimes it's more than the money it is looking to the future and see what will last, 100/200/300 year old buildings are not really designed for the 21st Century.

Have you found out how much it will cost to replace all the working parts inside ?

OKay Phil, let's play your game. £4.9m to prevent the clock from failing.

Is that what they say will cost to replace all the parts you suggest or just a mish mash or old and new ?

I have no issue with preserving buildings and our heritage apart from cost, where do you draw the line £40Mil? £50Mil? £100Mil? £500Mil? This will be on top of the 7 Billion for the rest of The Palace of Westminister

Seriously, all has been announced was the government statement, I was not involved in the costings!
