What is the best way to get your yardages, there are no decent fields near me and the driving range isnt much use as they arnt full distance balls and you cant exactly walk down the range to measure!

Sky caddies and the like have a mode whereby you can measure any shot. Buy, borrow or hire one and you can play the course measuring and recording any shot that you want.

I carry a notebook and a laser range finder around with me. I measure distance to the pin before and after the shot and then write it down along with wind and slope direction. After a while you'll get a pretty good picture of how far you're hitting.

Notebook must come in handy on courses next to a rail line too!!?? :D

The problem as I see it is that you have to judge the carry distance. Unless the ground is so soft that the ball plugs, how the hell do you know from 150 yards away where the ball pitched - even apporoximately. Unless you've got your Caddy waiting to mark the carry distance with a small flag.....

If you're having to guess where the ball lands then your yardages are going to be approximate so you might as well guess them too.

Find a golf club that has Flight Scope and they'll let you know for a small charge. Has made a big improvement to my game. Doing this is only of use if you know accurate distances to greens on the course so I'd only do it if you already have a skycaddie or something similar:

Working out my golf club distances
