Hi all

Apologies if this has been done before but what do you all think the best links course in the UK , never to hold the open championship.

For me, its a Toss Up for me

** East Course, Saunton
** Burnham & Berrow

Neither ever will. It's so subjective and to be honest there are a number of the courses used for various final qualifiers at different times that arguably could do the job but it boils down to same many different elements and not just the course

Think that's the only real answer.

No its not.

Its a question about the best course you think has not hosted an open. Not a question what is the best course not to have hosted an Open. Totally different can of worms.

Given that The Open has to be on a links course and has to have other courses nearby, for LFQ, and access and plentiful accommodation nearby, it's not surprising that the likes of Dornoch and Macrahanish are not on the circuit.

However Royal Aberdeen, Hillside, Royal County Down and Royal Portrush are potential candidates imo. There are also a couple of great links courses on the Norfolk coast - Hunstanton, Royal West Norfolk/Brancaster and Royal Cromer.

Personally, wouldn't rate Saunton - too old fashioned/silly quirky - for The Open imo. B&B has a fine reputation, but is it outstanding? I'm more inclined to think Kingsbarns would get it first. And Trump's place? More likely to have a new tournament imo - no bad thing.

BTW. Heard a wonderful report of Hayling Island from a low-capper colleague who played it the other day.

Goswick=massively overrated.

Opinions opinions but as a golf course it is second to none in Northern England.....just wish it would up it's game in conditioning but it's streets ahead as a golf course to either Silloth or Seaton Carew and those or the only two challenging.... Northern England is very short of quality golf courses in comparison to the rest of the UK.
