BBC _ Arrogant, incompetent or both?

This was an important investigation into serious issues and, as I understand, Blackburn lied when questioned. Don't think he has anyone to blame but himself.

Where did you get the info that Blackburn lied? My understanding from reading a couple of news reports is that he gave evidence that differed from evidence put forward by the BBC. It seems to me that either Blackburn lied or the BBC evidence was a lie. I haven't seen anything so far that would indicate which of those two scenarios is correct.

I watched some of the press conference. They said they fired him because he gave answers they knew were untrue.

Haven't seen the press conference and have only read a couple of online reports. Will be interesting to see if Blackburn does go through with his threat to sue to see what comes out during the court case.

Only seen snippets from news feeds on the mobile but seems strange that because his version didn't mirror their own accounts it's assumed he was lying and so fired him. Hardly going to encourage any whistleblowers in the organisation going forward to stand up and say anything.

I think this goes beyond the BBC. It seems that the establishment, from the Beeb to the police to Number 10, knew all about this and did nothing. Thatcher had a lot to do with helping him again access to NHS facilities despite numerous complaints about him and the 'open secret' about what he was like. Even when she proposed knighting Savile in the last 80s, her officials tried hard to dissuade her, but she didn't believe them. Not a party political point, because others in other parties knew just the same and did no more.

Likewise the political aped scandals. The establishment knew all about these guys and did nothing.

The whole thing stinks and we now know that nobody will be held to account for it until they are dead.

I would agree with you about Scottish newsnight, truly awful.
Interesting that despite many requests the BBC Scotland have refused to reveal viewing figures for the show.
Needs root and branch sorting IMO.

Someone, possible Esther Rantzen, made a very sensible comment yesterday. They can't change what has happened but we can change the future. The people who carried out the abuse are either dead or decrepit so most will escape justice. However, we must make sure the same culture does not exist now. I suspect that is the case. The days of "talent" or big bosses being able to do what they want without comeback must surely be over. That is the challenge, to make sure it can not happen again.

One thing that must come out of all this is surely that victims (and sadly there will still be some) should not be afraid to come forward at the earliest opportunity and for them to feel secure that they will be listened to and their cases properly investigated.
This will, in time, hopefully reduce future offenders.

As for the BBC I tend to sway more towards incompetence or indifference rather than arrogance, and accusations of political bias on their part seem to come equally from all sides so, in that respect, they must be getting it about right.

I like the fact that the Beeb manage to tee off one political group or another on a weekly/daily basis... Shows they are doing something right...

With regard Blackburn it would appear some 45 year old 'paperwork', regarding his employment history, has found its way into the public domain... How is this possible? Thought under data protection all such 'paperwork' can only be kept for two years...
