As per the heading. For a few days now when I fill the bath the water is cloudly and lightly brown in colour. We have an gas boiler down stairs that heats the water and a tank in the airing cupboard but do not use the immersion heater. The tank is only about 6 years old.

Any idea guys? Thanks in advance

Could it be down to the recent weather? Sometimes you do get muck washing down especially if there are any frozen and burst pipes further up the supply.
Id leave it for a day or two and see if it improves.

Run the hot tap only to see what happens.

Run the cold tap only and see what happens.

If both are bad it's likely the supply.

....ask your neighbours if they have the same.

could be work done on the supply pipe further away, dirt gets in, however, call the water board and they will clarify in case there is external contamination.

Couple of questions first.

What's the cold mains water like is that coming trough clear or does it have a colour to it.
Have you had a meter fitted in last few days as I know your area is part of the Compulsory metering programmes that are being run by Southern, South East and Thames Water.

It could simply be where some dirt has come through because of a mains leak/burst in your area and where the pressure has retur ed some dirt may or iron in old type pipes has squeezed through in to the header tank. Likewise if you had a recent cmp meter fitted where they work on the pipes could have forced some dirt trough.

Best thing to do as a test is run it to waste so let it run through for a while see if it starts coming through clear if it does it was just some dirt and debris stuck if it doesnt then call a plumber. If you have a water meter running to waste cost you so i'd recommend a call your water provider but instead of saying its water from your tank that's discoloured tell them its the mains water to and you want to run it to waste but are concerned of it costing you, they are obliged in this situation to give you a 4 cubic meter run to waste allowance so you won't have pay for the water you ran off.

If you have had a compulsory meter fitted recently ring the water company anyway and they have to get a plumber out to you to resolve it foc for upto 6 months after install, even if it means theyy have to replace parts regardless of cost they have to foot the bill for it. They get either a company called Clancy Docwra or Waterlink to do the repair for you.

If its none of the above then call a plumber should be easy to resolve. If it is the waterboard issue just don't let them palm you off I work for them and they are oblige to do the above even though they try to say otherwise
