I use any ball i have in the bag as long as it's not damaged etc but does it matter to a very high handicapper to always use the same. sorry if this question has been asked a thousand times but new to the game. :D

well, yes alec. each ball has a certain technology within them to assist your game. ie, if you are hitting the ball with a high slice, you really need a ball that spins less than your standard off the shelf "topflite"(yeuch).
I always say to take a mid-spec ball with higher handicap, ie titliest nxt, a good ball tha performs well, and not too expensive.
Its all up to the idividual though, just like equipment.I use to be a 21 handicapper, and there is no doubt as i got better, i bought better equipment, and this all helped get me to a lower handicap. You wouldnt know it the way im playing at the moment though!(check my other posts, lol)

Does it matter? Not a lot i.m.o. I've had good games with ancient balls that've seen three or four rounds. I don't play with a new ball on knock-abouts. Never bothers me.

i often play with balls i've found when hunting for my own. Maybe i should hit the 50 odd ones i've found up the playing fields and stick to one. cheers for that biff.

another point is feel alec, i have to brands i use because i like the way they feel off every club in the bag, and you have to remember, harder balls ie topflite, will not stop as well as the premium balls around the greens. i suppose experimentation is the key.

welcome onto the forum alec ,where about in fife do you play - i wouldn`t think it matters what type of ball you play ,low h`cappers tend to play with a `softer` feeling ball such as a pro `v` or nike ,callaway black etc .because you get more feel on the greens ..med h`cappers i know play the `nxt` ball as it gives them a combination of feel and distance and higher h`cappers tend to just go with `distance `balls ,so they gain more off the tee ! the choice is yours ..play with what ever feels best for you mate ,just cause your a higher h`cap player doesn`t mean you can`t play a `premium` ball. ask bob mac on here - he`s a pro ! he`ll point u in the right direction :D

i play at elmwood just outside cupar. Decent course and asking loads(maybe too many) of questions as i'm a late starter to the game at 43 but want to get the best out of it. :o

Alec,
I think if you use the same type of ball, then you are likely to become more consistant, especially around the greens. What i mean is you do not want to play with a ball that checks up quickly, then change to one that just runs and runs. This game is hard enough as it is, without chopping and changing.

I guess it comes down to how many per round you are losing and hown much you can afford. If you alosing loads then it would probably make sense to buy some reasonably cheap ones until you get more consistant. You have a choice then. You can go for the cheaper balls that tend to be very firm and won't feel great especially with a putter or a wedge. Alternatively if you can stretch to a few quid per dozen more then look at something like the AD333 which will give you a bit more feel and stop http://www.best4balls.com/srixon-ad333-pack-p-858.html

i play pro v's, nikes, callaways etc all random but never lose many but was asking if i use the same will it help. my playing parner who plays of a 22 handicap always uses prostaff balls and if we find any he gives them to me and i just use any.

If as you say you don't lose many, then i would say buy some good quality lake balls and use the same everytime you play. Then its one less thing to worry about, plus you will get to know how its going to react on all your shots.

I don't think it matters at all, you need to learn to hit the thing properly, a moderate distance, and in play before you worry too much about scoring.

I got to single figure h/cap (shot 3 over on my second h/cap card) playing with any ball I find. If I remember rightly that round was with a Callaway hot FX or something like that

That said I would stay a country mile away from anything that says Topflite on it!

Top flites get alot of bad talk on here (and else where). My Dad has played them all his life. He has a wicked slice, always has done, and put a proV1 in his hands, and you will never see it again. Each to their own.

In the summer I play ProV1. Every game. In the winter, it really makes no difference at all. Every thing stops if the greens are soft, nothing stops if they are frozen. Currently using Pinnacle exceptions, which are fine.

AD333 are a reasonable compromise for all year use.

Several low handicap friends I play with use the scrappiest rubbish golf balls you will ever see. It doesn't seem to make any difference to them.

Buy yourself a few dozen "middle of the road" balls and stick with them..something that is going to give you decent length off the tee and be a little bit "softer" around the greens.

Ignore the silly name. These are a great ball...

and at £9.95 a dozen they won't break the bank.
I could quite happily play with these for the rest of my golfing days (Summer & Winter) and certainly wouldn't blame them if I didn't play to my handicap.
In fact, I scored 37 points with a blob using one the other day....and I didn't have to hit a provisional once during the round so they obviously don't impart too much sidespin
;) ;) ;)

I agree with this comment. Whatever standard you are I always advise to use the same balls all the time, regardless of what they are. You need to get used to how they feel, react etc. Changing manufacturer and compression types every other round or even a few holes is adding another complication to your game.

You do not want to hit a putt with a hard ball and in a few holes time hit a putt with a soft balata type - it will screw with your head.

My advice = pick a brand and compression type and use it all the time. If you buy pick-ups (nothing wrong with that) make sure they are the ones you choose.

The game is complicated enough without changing equipment all the time. Using the same clubs and ball types all the time - takes a potential issue out of the equation.

I used to just use any ball that had did not have a massive scuff in it.
Now I mainly use lake balls and finds that are makes and models that I recognise as long as they do not have massive scuffs...
...I think I'm a bit posh now???

I use any old tatties during the winter and I'm thinking of going with Srixion AD333s this spring to see what they are like.

The Callaways that we got as samples were too good for me to hit with anything bigger than a 7 iron as I put waaaaay to much side spin on them.

I used the philosophy 'cheap is good' all last year, as I just didn't fancy found or reconditioned balls & preferred new cheap.
Stopped using the dunlop loco when someone laughed at me cause i'm a sensitive type :D but used various bargain bucket/charity shop buys. When I decided I was losing them infrequently enough to use some better balls I used the Srixon free subscription gift ones and they were rubbish! They all vanished in about 5 mins!

However reading through this thread and feeling much more confident and able this year I'm going to up the quality and use the same ones for a while. Toss up between whichever is cheapest in the sports shop my contact works in of the srixon & maxfli listed above unless anyone recommends anything else?
