Might seem obvious to some, but not to me as a newbie!

I play with a Srixon AD333 as my match ball and usually have another make (so as to be clear which was the first ball when playing a provisional) in my left pocket as a 'frightener'.

My question is if the second ball has to come into play can I then swap back to another AD333 on the next tee? There was some (mild) disagreement on this in the last comp. :D

Tee to green you have to play with the same ball, unless it is damaged or lost.

On the tee, you can select a ball to use for that hole, yes.

If you were a pro, then no, you have to use the same make and model, but this rule does not exist for us hackers.

Yes you can, unless you play in events that specify only one make of ball, you cannot change back during the hole.

My question would be why don't you just mark your balls so you can tell which is which, then you can use the balls you like all the time - I mark them with the same markings just different colours.

I have one ball that is always my provisional , it is marked with a different colour and I change back to my originals at the end of the hole and the pro goes back in the pocket.

Whoops. Don't see why it should have stirred anyone's brain.

I swap quite regularly, never mid-hole (obviously) and always "announcing" the new ball, which is more than I can say for most at my club.

I play the 1st at mine (short par 3) with the "spinniest" ball I can find. Then, swap to my regular ball up 'till the 9th. On the 10th, I use a Nike Vapor for the two long par 4s and par 5. Then back to the regular ball.

The Vapor goes much further than my normal PX spin, so an extra few yards could mean getting on in two.

I normally play the same make and just have two balls with different numbers (both have my 3 dot mark). At the moment I'm swapping between Cally Ix, Nike One, Srixon Z star and TM TP black (have some reds to try as well). I've got some Titleist as well but then to use those for competitive matches or until I can decide on a definitive ball. Mind you I only use premium ones in the summer as most balls tend to hold the green in winter anyway so out will come the stash of AD333 and NXT. I might use any old premium balls (scuffed and dirty) for comps.

Never keep a ball in your pocket. You are just tempting fate to make you use it. Likewise one of those telescopic sticks form getting a ball out of your stream - don't keep one of those in your bag.
