Back problems

not had an op for it but have suffered from it in the past. my wife is a physio and gives good advise.

lots of posture exercises and core strength exercises. do these until you are bored of them and keep going, then some more. keep the exercises going when you are fit again and include lots of stretches, especially of the hamstrings.

I've had my fair number of back injuries that all started when i broke my neck playing football at the tender age of 23! 11 years later and i'm doing a hell of a lot more than the docs said i would be!

What do they do exactly in the op? I've only ever had to do exercises and take time to recover from a prolapsed disc (it's the same as what a chiropractor would call a slipped disc btw).

Hi Slugger

I had this operation about 3 1/2 years ago, its called a discectomy, basically the disc has come out trapping the sciatic nerve causing mega pain. They make a small incision, remove a small amount of bone, then slice off the part of the disc that is sticking out.
Then they move the sciatic nerve and hollow out the wall where it was trapped, so if it happens again, it wont get trapped so badly.
I was up on my feet next day, out of hospital in 2 days, Not allowed to drive for 6 weeks.
8 weeks of physio including pool work.
I would say that you are looking at 4 to 6 months off golf
You have to give the injury time to heal and the twisting motion of the swing is going to hurt if you go back too soon.

I now am totally pain free and picked up the sticks again about a year ago.although i gather that about 20% of peeps still have some residual pain

the best advise i can give you is to get out and walk, after 2 weeks you should be able to do 5 miles a day

just do it, lots of long walks

And good luck,
