If you want to buy just one Blu ray disc to show you what your system can do, buy this one....

Purchased it yesterday whilst out shopping and without a shadow of doubt this is the best picture and sound quality I have ever experienced on a disc.
The storyline is good for all ages, but it's the soundtrack and quality of picture that blew me away.
You really need a surround sound sytem to take real advantage of the DTS HD soundtrack, but even without you would be hard pushed to find better.
Highly recommended, and really shows the difference between standard DVD and Blu ray quality.

Isn't that a coincidence. I purchased the combi pack of UP and tried 3 different ways of watching the disk(s) just to see how things compare.
1) dvd on dvd player
2) dvd on blu-ray player (upscaled)
3) blu-ray on blu-ray.
No surprise, the quality went up each time and the quality on blu-ray is outstanding.

What I really wanted to say (having lived with blu-ray for a while now) is that it is remarkable and even regular dvds look better played on the blu-ray player. I watch Wall-E and The Departed last week and both were exceptional using the mysterious upscaling process. If you buy a blu-ray player it will be worth watching your old dvds on it. It's NOT high definition (some folk think it effectively is) but it's good.

HOWEVER, and this is my verdict.
If you have a small TV, you are going to need very very good vision to fully appreciate blu-ray. We have an HD Panasonic Viera 26" and I wouldn't say blu-ray offers any extra value to the enjoyment of a good film.
But, I also tried it on 46" Viera and on the larger TVs you really get a noticeable improvement.
I reckon the bigger the TV, the more I'd recommend blu-ray even if just to play your dvds.
