Anyone got a diesel Mini?

I've been thinking of changing my car and a 2.0L diesel Mini Cooper S is on my shortlist. Official consumption figures for the 143bhp model are about 72mpg extra urban (majority of my driving) but reviews seem to suggest the car gets nowhere even close to this with many saying the consumption is really bad. With this sort of quoted figure I would expect something around 60mpg in the real world.

Does anyone have any first hand experience please?

I get around 50 even in my petrol cooper if I unplug the curling tongs to save battery!

Any chance I can retract my comment in St Enodoc's car park about you driving a girly car.......pretty please? :D

My wife has a 1.6d Mini Countryman. Unfortunately she has never done a check so we have no idea what the mpg figures are. Two comments I would make regarding Mini's. One, the tyre noise can be loud partly as they have run flats. Two, add at least one of the extra packs. The car in basic form is quite basic. Add a pack or two and suddenly the quality levels are lifted quite noticeably.

I quite like the car but if she gets another we will spend more time speccing it up.

Dont have first hand experience of this car or engine, but I doubt most who have one drive it in an economical manner then wonder why the consumption isn't as stated. Having said that, it wasn't that long ago (after the VW fiasco came to light) that Citroen produced real life consumption figures for a range of their models, both petrol and deisel, and the discrepancy was between 25-33 % down on the stated consumption figures.

Check out Honest John Real MPG - Most cars sit at 75-80% of claimed mpg

Yes I checked that thanks, there are a load of Mini variants and I will be buying used so not sure which one yet. If I change, likely to be something around 2011 to 2013 with low mileage as I will be clocking up a lot of motorway commuting miles.

My wife's last car was a petrol Cooper s and I think the fuel consumption was ok ........... But then she rarely went over 35mph!

Whatever you do, don't get a convertible - they are so noisy and shaky! I'd say get as high a spec as you can if doing a lot of motorway driving.

Does it have to be a mini? If not, have you considered a VW Golf? Much more refined.

Have a look at this forum. there is a discussion on the SD consumption there.

I owned 5 MINIs and recently moved to an Audi A3. My advice is to not over spec the car. MINI residuals are nowhere near what they used to be and if you spend thousands on extras you will lose pretty much all of that when you come to trade it in.

MINIs are great cars. Have a look at the normal Cooper D if it has to be a diesel. My last one was the latest model Cooper with a 1.5 turbo (petrol), almost 140bhp and a brilliant engine. I averaged 48mpg over the 32 000 miles i had it. I would have bought another if Audi were not looking so good on PCP figures.

Spent quite a bit of time doing my research over the weekend. The Mini range was revamped in 2014 with a completely new and much improved car so I will make sure I buy a later model.

Once again, thanks for all your input

Don't know about MPG but did drive the Cooper SD soft top as a holiday rental. Absolutely loved it apart from it seriously messed my hair about - see avatar

Currently sat in the dealership trying to thrash out a deal ;)

Has the sales guy "gone to see his manager" yet? I hate that line.

Yeah and it was an epic fail on their part. I wanted £5k trade in for mine, they said no chance best they could offer is £4500 then went away to see 'the man' and came back and said "what we can do is......"

Bottom line is they gave me £5300 for mine because they can't add up properly! Paid in full before they changed their minds, collect it on Thursday hopefully :)

Ha ha, well done. I've leased for years because I hate the slaver that goes with buying. I don't want to nail any dealer, I just want to deal with a straight one that doesn't give me a sales pitch.

I like the Mini. My wife has a countryman, her sister has a 3 door type. Easy to drive and solid. You can also be a bloke and drive one, unlike the Fiat 500 she had for a while.......

So.....had the car for 3 weeks now and really enjoying driving it. My previous car (BMW 325D M Sport) was chipped to give a bit more ooomph and I've been looking into getting the Mini done as well.

Just spoke to my insurance company...... 0-10% increase in power = no price increase, 26%+ they won't insure the car but 11-25% increase in power and my insurance REDUCES by £22 a year :D

That makes it a no-brainer in my opinion.

Glad you are enjoying the new car - it's a lovely feeling... :) Interested in upgrading my 325D at some point (when there's a few more miles on it most likely), what figures did you get after the upgrade? 206hp std right?
