I am using SPSS previously known as PASW for my dissertation.

I remember looking at that in the late 70s!

Didn't get into enough detail - and too long ago - to be be useful to you, but there were plenty of books about it even before IBM bought it. You may be able to find some IBM Red Books that could help, but shouldn't need to get that deep. IBM Manuals can be extremely helpful at times - if pitched at the appropriate level!

The whole idea of these packages is to remove the need to know the package intimately - and just let you do the analysis of the data! Whether that's actually achieved is questionable, but the old SPSS seemed relatively good for its time. SAS was much more popular where I came from, albeit very greedy!
