I've got an old Mercedes C 280 Automatic I use for golf and the dogs & I have loads of 10w-40 Semi-Synthetic Multivas Performance Oil & I want to know if I can use it OK?

Don't want to have to go and buy something specific if this oil will do?

She's done 150k and still as smooth as ever so I don't want to bugger her up.

Cheers Steve, I just went onto a Halfords site and put my reg in and it advises their own 5w-40 synthetic or Mobil 1 0w-40 but this I've got is 10w-40. What's the difference, is it just thicker and could it do any harm?
 
I would be careful with this. Some oils, especially synthetic types, don’t mix with other oils. It all depends on what’s in the engine right now. I would go for a fully synthetic, its miles ahead of other oils and it lasts much longer too. Do you know what oil is in it just now.

Don’t muck about, use the best, get the best.
 
No idea what's in it now as I always get it looked after at a garage but just checked it prior to travelling to Blackmoor tomorrow and she needs some oil.

Marginally 'thicker' which in theory suits engines with a higher mileage under their belt... Regular oil changes for older vehicles is more important than the 'right oil'...
 
Well its in now, so if you see anything resembling an old steam engine chuffin' down the M40/M25/M3, it's me!!
 
Do not mix oils. I can"t stress that enough. The oil you need is dependant on the engine type and size. 10w40 is fine for most petrol cars in either A1 or A4 variant. I wouldnt use A2 unless its a newer motor. Always replace ALL of the oil if you are unsure and renew the filter.

Diesel engines must have a lower viscosity oil such as 0w30 or 5w30 anything higher/thicker can cause damage as my mate found out in his Astra 1.9cdti, fair enough its a crap Fiat block thats in those but still.

I am by no means a mechanic to trade but I build a lot if cars as projects and strip engines for fun so know a bit about it.
