Any Gin Drinkers Out Their

Looking for a decent bottle of gin for my sister in law for her birthday, the gin equivalent of a single malt. So far been toying with Tanqueray 10 or Hendricks as these seem to be well thought of.


My knowledge of gin over and above pub brands is pretty limited so has anyone got an recommendations.

Tanqueray is my own personal favourite... Ladies that I know who partake seem to like Bombay Sapphire...

for a real treat - Tanqueray Rangpur Lime Gin - you can get it in Waitrose
its beautiful

for something completely different - Saffron Gin is a good shout

That sounds promising, I looked at Tanqueary Rangpur as an option as well as the Tanqueray 10.

Gosh - lots on there that even i havent tried
Blackwoods - nice but not amazing
Hendricks - OK but has to be drunk with cucumber - and i'm not a fan of cucumbers!
Edinburgh gin - bit dull
Boudier Saffron - thats the one i mentioned above - very unusual
Tanq no 3 - never tried it - but am going to! sounds fab - its got grapefruit and cardamon...yum!
Crown jewel - i had a nip of this once years ago - didnt impress
Rives special - spanish make - very nice
Bombay sapphire - very pleasant gin

I'd still recommend a tanqueray for a pressie tho

That is really great advice, could not have asked for better. Just a toss up between an Tanqueray or going for something a bit out of the ordinary that she will not have tried and taking a punt on the safron.

I can guarantee a happy birthday girl with the tanq rangpur, no 3 or no 10.
If u chuck in some lemons/limes and slimline tonic and a bag of ice - or some groovy ice cube trays, then u will be the bestest bruv in law on the planet and mind and wrap it up pretty

A good tip is buy the small cans of Tonic as each one is the perfect measure for a Gin, that tip came straight from inside Diageo

Used to like Plymouth. Nicely flavoured traditional Gin. Maybe not quite fancy enough for a pressie though.

A good tip is buy the small cans of Tonic as each one is the perfect measure for a Gin, that tip came straight from inside Diageo

The other good thing with this is that you never end up with half a bottle of flat tonic.

I am very partial to a proper gin martini, and have been on various cocktail making courses as a result.

The guy who taught the class at Vinopolis in London recommended Hendrick's, Plymouth and for an easy to get hold of supermarket option, Tanqueray, as being decent (not great though).

One to avoid was Bombay Sapphire... more marketing hype than quality in his view.

Also worth looking up Sipsmiths... a small London distiller that make some fine fine liquor.

I've always had good service from them, I've seen Tanqueray recommended for cocktails which may make a difference if they are likely to be mixing it with other forms of alcohol as opposed to just mixers / juice.

Only ever had home brew sloe gin. It was some sort of mad Island tradition on Rothesay to see who could brew the most potent sloe gin. Think I was sick for about 4 hours solid after a night drinking that crap.

The village I lived in until last year has an annual Sloe Gin competition. Everyone submits their entries and you then pay £5 to charity to judge. 52 entries last year and very little memory of the day after.
