Yep, in my day any assault on the referee led to a "sine die" ban but would usually be around 5 years in reality

Zidane got a 3 match ban from international football and ordered to do some community service with a FIFA kids charity. But it was well known that this was his last match as he had already retired and come back especially for the World Cup , he never served his ban.

Also the headbutt was head to chest, rather than head to face so a different type of offence.
