I'm off to the good ol' US of A to visit family next month and was planning to get a round or two of golf in while I'm there. I did some googling to find out which courses were close to where we're staying and found one which had the following photo on their website:

Is it just me or is that green in woeful condition? The green fees are only $15 so maybe that tells its own story (even if it is in the middle of nowhere) but then again, maybe it's not as bad as it looks or the photo was taken at a bad time. Might give it a go anyway. It could turn out to be either the bargain of the year or a waste of money.
 
The green looks as though it has been strip mown with a drum mower rather than rotary mown. Might also have had some tining done? Maybe it was taken in winter when course maintenance was in progress - but then why put it on the web?
 
Marketing manager should be shot in the face ....... i think you will find most clubs sell their place to you by putting up pics of the course at its glorious best on a summers day , .. can you imagine what the rest is like if this the best ? even for $15 id say its a waste... oh wait $15 = what? .. £3.. :)

I wish it was £3, I'd be out in the US once a month during football season if that was the case! It's about £8-£9
 
The problem I find with America is that it's so big you have to travel for ages to get anywhere, obviously this depends where you live but in most cases you have a good 15-20 minute drive just to get to a supermarket.

It's the same with decent golf courses, a lot of people then decide to knock up what can only be described as a shite pitch and putt in the vast amount of land and have the audacity to call it a golf course, mainly to try and squeeze a few $$ out of people who don't want to travel so far. Where I stay in Pennsylvania the nearest decent course is about an hour and a half away, on route to the course you pass 3 courses that I wouldn't touch. That's not me being a snob, it's literally because all they are is a mowed field with a pin.
 
You'll also find some states are better than others when it comes to courses. PA not so great, Florida is superb, there is decent course after decent course but if you play in Florida remember the two golden rules....

1) If your ball goes within 5 meters (differs at each course) of a water hazard it's "his" ball, by which I mean the resident, not so friendly Alligator.

2) If your ball goes into some woodland, generally thick woodland then it's "his" ball, by which I mean the resident, very unfriendly venomous snake.

Stick to those rules in Florida and you'll be fine.....or so I'm told.
 
Looking through some of the other pictures it doesn't look too bad, maybe they were just working on the greens at the time. Chances are you won't need to book a tee time at this place so probably best to just rock up, inspect the condition and if it looks OK then have a round. If not, jump back in the car and find somewhere else.

I'm almost tempted to offer to redo their website for them. I'm no expert at graphic design etc. but I'm sure with a little work, even I could make it look a good bit better than it does.
 
That looks alright to me and for that price, better looking than some of the tracks I've played on over here at £20. Their website is like going back in time
 
I suspect it is a special offer while they remodel the course. 15$ is very cheap.
Florida. 5 yards from water? I just go to the edge, look for Mr Gator and if no sign retrieve my ball.Mind you on one occasion four of us saw three baby gators on the edge of a lake, walked up and took pictures (as you do) but beat a hasty retreat when someone said " where's mother"!
As for the jungle. If you want to find loads of top quality balls in two minutes just march in and start picking them up. Snakes; what snakes!
