I was playing in the medal a couple of weeks ago and got cut .3 The problem was (off 18) I was 5 over to the turn (PB) and nine over with 3 holes to play. Our last 3 are par 4,4,3 and I managed to go 9,8,5.

Heres a few things I learned,
1- always have some grub in the bag to eat during a round as around 12-13 I got hungry by 16 I was v.hungry.

2- Keep track of my score at all times, during this round I knew I was playing well but wasnt keeping my own score and asked my playing partner not to tell me. I knew I was playing really well just didnt know exactly how well. Probally would have played 17 differently.

3 - Take a practice swing in the rain. It started to rain heavy on our 15th which I got par. On the walk across the road I put full waterproofs on and rushed my 16th tee shot without a practice swing. Cue lost ball and 2nd tee shot into guff which took 2 to get out of. Extra layers will mean a differnt type swing.

I also 3 putted the last three holes and knocked my approach long OOB in 17 which I have never done. It was a normal wedge to green which I nailed and it just flew.

I was just so frustrated, on one hand my swing felt the best ever for most of the round, I got a cut but the finish killed me.

On the up it shows me I am getting closer to playing better golf. All in all I am happy with my golf but cant help thinking what might have been......

Its always good looking back Fabian.....As when the situations arise again you can chage them.......We learn from mistakes better than any other way......

I never want to know a score until im walking off the 18th.....That way there is no undue pressure on you.....

When implaying that well with 3 or so to go i always play the safe option.....Maybe take 5 wood or long irons off the par 4's and keep it in play.....Think of it this way....Hit two 7 Irons on any par 4 and you'll more than likely be within chipping distance or a wedge of the green...

Iv had a few cuts this season but the one that stands out the most was 42 points in a stableford......My dad commented to me afterwards that i had the same smooth swing for the whole 18 holes regardless of what club i had in my hand......The funny thing was that the night before it i only got 1hrs sleep because i was getting sick......
I think tht the following day i had so little energy that i actually couldnt physically swing the club hard which actually worked to my advantage.....
Iv struggled to get that swing back but i will eventually catch it......

As for the grub....A banana and 3 nature valley bars is the job...Plus some water.....I have 1 bar on the 3rd....1 on the 8th a banana at the 12th and another bar on the 16th......This will keep the energy levels up all through the round. :)
Oh and 1 more thing Pal.....Im not sure if im the only one that does this but rain doesnt bother me too much..(From my football playing days) But if your someone that has a shower after your round at the club and it starts to rain on 16,17 or 18 leave the wet gear in the ba and just stick a sleeveless wind breaker on and use your brolly.....

It doesnt matter if your wet walking off the 18th as the shower will be waiting and you dont have to be playing the last 3 fiddling with waterproofs.....Everyon's happy then! :D

Ye if its cold and I start with a jumper on I will try and get it off as soon as pos and If it starts raining and its late in the round or looks like a shower I will not put raid gear on.

Kid interesting that you play a lower club off the tee if you think things are under control. It seems to be working for you but do you not think that is as dangerous? I could not do that as we have some LONG holes on our back 9. We have a few 445 yard par 4s on the back and when one of them plays wind into its HARD to get to in 2 with a driver and a 3 wood/hybird.

Conditions an hole permitting Alex......Im not saying i would literally take a 7 Iron but if it was a case of being under a little pressure and a solid score was needed then i would pick a club accordingly.....I wouldn't neccessarily reach for a driver or wood so to speak!

9-8-5 is that not the end of your mobile number????

Feckin should be!

I agree with this. If you are 5 over par at the turn you should KNOW you are, then next time you will be able to say to yourself "No problem I've done this before". If you are 6 over next time you can focus on the birdie you need to make! :)

Some great points there guy and I like the picture Crawford but it wasnt a bottle crashing moment. That never came into the equation. Maybe if I knew how well I was playing I could use it as excuse.

All in all I can sort the above easy enough. Grub in the bag simple, keep track of score also simple. Rushing and not taking a practice swing was just a mental error and something easy to fix.

I like kid2's idea of not bothering with waterproofs if going for a shower afterwards. And also hitting a smaller club but as it is I only normally hit 3 wood off 16 and 17. 18 is a 220 yard par 3 normally into the wind so hit 3 wood short most of the time there aswell. Maybe drop down a club off 16th tee migh help.

As I said at the start I was chuffed with my ball striking that day and my swing was nice and controlled and smooth. Heres to the next medal round in November....

I agree with most of whats been said.

I'll usually have a couple of bottles of lucozade sport and some chocky bars when I'm playing to keep the energy up.

Not sure I agree with using a lower club than you normally would. Might work for some.

I've tried this and it doesn't work for me.

I'd rather play the hole as I normally play it. I've played it that way 100 times like that before, so should know how to. You just need to make sure you commit to the shot.

If you've been playing that well up until then keep it going.

Maybe if you've been having a bit of a wobble with the driver in the last few holes then maybe drop to a 3w or hybrid. But not if I've been nailing all my drives all day.

I have to agree that in my mind (planet homer) if I deliberately club down to lay up short and play safe it'll be the signal to swing fast and ahrd and probably make a poorer shot than if I'd trusted the swing that had got me to +5 and played the hole in the normal way.

As a diabetic it's pretty important to me to keep the sugars right so I make sure I've had a decent breakfast (porridge or sugar free muesli) and then have plenty of water and a couple of bananas. I carry a box of raisins too which although higher in sugar than I'd like do the trick if I need a boost
