After reading a few negative posts on over recent months regarding American Golf. I think it's only fair to share the great experience my wife and I had at their 'Shoreham' branch.

The better half has just taken up the game and so we went to buy her, her first set of clubs.

The staff were great and couldn't do more for us.They even did a price match for us and she walked away with a set of Callaway Razor X irons and the Razor X Driver. Well....we'll pick them up in two weeks as they were custom fitted.

Great work from AG!

I've been to 3 AG stores of different sizes and been impressed each time, friendly helpfull staff who were knowledgable. I bought my irons and driver there because of that

i think it depends on were you live,i have found both AG stores near me leave a lot to be desired and seem to only be interested in flogging what they have best mark up on,i will be buying my new shinys from our club pro. he has a full trackman set up and an indoor fitting centre and will price match on everything as he is a member of foremost golf.

I too have good praise for AG

I visited them instead of DG and in my wallet had the £20 discount card from DG. Showed it to them and they gave me a discount off my purchases, well done guys

I find that the anti AG stance comes from South of the border. I bought a pair of shoes yesterday and the service I got was top notch in Clydebank. Genuine customer service wanting to help and offer advice.

Very impressed by AG in World of Golf Clydebank.

The guys at EK have always been great with me, price matches etc, only blip was fitting me for red dot ping i15's (0.75 flat), hcp went from 8 to 10, fitted for my Titleist's and needed 2deg up, guy checked my pings and ball strikes were all out the toe

It funny that a couple of AG Braids staff, get there clubs fitted from my Pro. I have always found the staff @ AG very helpful, i just wouldn't get fitted there. Horses & courses and all that.

I'm a regular in the AG in Coventry and the service is excellent.

I own a large retail store myself so I almost analyse things as soon as I walk in, I can't help it!

There helpful, not pushy, acknowledge you and are very honest in their appraisals.

They are also price matching against an independent shop that I would rather use however they, the independent won't match AG!

The only downside with AG is they don't offer very good value against trade-in clubs, especially when its for store credit and reinvestment back into them.

Sadly, AG lost its way.

All they want employed are merch monkeys who can dress a stand rather than sell a club. There are 2 stores Near me and there isn't a single golf pro in any of them, which for a golf shop, is vital. I had , in one of them, a 22hcp trying to sell me a driver and got his ball flight laws wrong and could answer a simple question about M.O.I (moment of inertia)

It's all about the mark up. At least with Direct Golf, there mark up maker, John Letters, they have invested in the brand and have a half decent product.

It's like me trying to sell a car to James May.

My stance on AG is well known and I can only quote on the service and experiences I've had from Bird Hills and Camberley in particular which has not been good. I would say that these are improving over the last few months although both still have staff that really shouldn't be trying to fit customers in their bays as they simply don't understand the data. That aside whilst I still remain nervous about the level of customer service they offer and the way they pray on the uninitiated to flog Wilson, Nicklaus, Yonex or Hogan whether they are suitable or not. I guess progress is being made but I'd rather buy elsewhere

As long as you know what your looking for id say AG is as good as the rest... Would I let them FIT me??? NO!!!

But...

They always price match and had my 6 iron sent to TM and fixed within 10 days (DG took 8 weeks with my mates Burner iron) so for that I have to praise them.

I shop at Coventry AG, and have never had an issue with the service provided, although to be fair my purchases have been clothing, shoes and balls

Was trying out a putter in the one on the A20 at Sidcup and one of the guys:

a) stopped me buying it
b) measured me for my own putter and told me it was too long
c) cut down the putter by an inch and re-gripped it
d) charged me a tenner for the grip and *nothing else*

Feels much better now.

Grant at the A20 store in Sidcup has agreed to swap a CG16 wedge (which I won on a society day, still wrapped and brand new) and £10 for a 50deg 588 wedge which he is having to order in. I was really impressed, as I'd been expecting a lot of knock-backs. Pro shop at the place we played at said, "sorry, you didn't buy it here, so can't swap it".

A couple of years ago (same store) I was after a trolley bag, and in particular the Sun Mountain H2nO cart bag, but was open to other options. They asked if I wanted help or was happy to look myself, and they let me wheel my leccy trolley in to test it out. No pressure to buy any of them (I bought the Sun Mountain).

Agree with other posters that I'm not sure I'd go there for custom fitting, but when you know what you want, my experience is that they've been very helpful.

YAWN! Change the record.

I've always been happy with AG in Cheltenham. There's a mix of skills/knowledge in the staff, so helps to get to know who you're talking to. But I've always come away happy.

Only downside is the size of and facilities at the store. It shares a unit with a Motorcycle Gear Shop (Hein Gericke) which had to close a few months ago due to a fire. Best thing AG could do is to expand next door so that they have double the space and can increase their CF area.
