Am I being unreasonable or unrealistic ?

I would leave the club.

My new club is great as pace of play is really brisk. It is one of the questions I asked at interview and it would've been a show stopper if they had said slow play was an issue.

It was the first question I asked at the open evening for my current club as it was the main reason I wanted to leave the last one. They said all the right things at the time and when I first joined it wasn't too bad, it's just over the past year it's got a lot worse.

not too sure many clubs are going to openly admit slow play is an issue to a potential new member are they?

They would've at mine. Fortunately it is not a problem. Played in a two ball last week and were done in two hours 20 minutes. No rushing, just ready to play when it was the right time to do so.

Repeat to myself 100 times, im not jealous.....

Glad its working out for you :)

Not unreasonable but perhaps a bit unrealistic if they are crammed on as tightly as you allude. Given your circumstances it may be better to move on again, but where do you go and would going back be a retrospective step? Are there no other clubs locally and within budget work looking at. Five plus hours for a medal is very unreasonable and your current club sound as though they've buried their heads in the sand. We go around in four hours for a medal. Four and a half is considered snails pace and will get you facing a barrage of flak in the 19th for being so (whether you were and it was your fault or not)

It's a shame you moved with such high hopes and it is hasn't come off as you hoped. I hope you can find a new home that suits or the old club has the same feel and pace of play and you ultimately are happy with your golfing lot

I was agreeing with this thread and then checked the sig... It's my current club.!
I've never completed a medal at this place as its sondamn slow... I was stuck behind a 5 ball of seniors on a weekday who wouldn't let us through.
The only benefit is that the course is looking really good at the moment. I brought three other members from brocket but I'm def only there till next year. It's easy to play in the evenings but the weekends are a joke.

i could understand a 5hr round just about if you went out last in the July medal.

teeing off at 8am and still taking that long would be completely unacceptable and unmanageable. i'd have to leave if that was the case, i don't think its unrealistic to expect a lot better

Unreasonable? Definitely not, you are paying good money for a club to suit your needs - those needs are not being met.

Unrealistic? maybe, if there isn't a single golf club in a 30 mile radius that fits what you are looking for, then yes you are being realistic.

If I were you, I would look for somewhere that fits what you want.

Our course (if my memory serves me correct) is a 6800yd/par 71 which on an average day will take about 3.5-4hrs but sometimes can take a whole lot longer, I've taken to going out early evenings as it seems to be very quiet after about 5:30/6:00pm, it has been known that myself and my regular playing partner are the only ones out on the course which as you can imagine is an absolute hoot, would it be possible to do the same at your course, of course being one of the 'green keepers' is a big advantage as I can pretty much come and go as I please, our course is open from sun-up till sun-down which is another great advantage that you may not have at your disposal !...

Have you tried varying the time you play ? WGC gets busy on a Saturday morning until 08.30 ish then quit ens down till around 11 then it's generally like a graveyard by 2pm. Sunday mornings is our only booked time from 08:00 till 09:30, I have played Sunday mornings for the last 15 years, a slow round would be 4 hours including a 10 min stop at the halfway hut.

Unfortunately at weekends I need to go out sometime between about 7:30 and 8:30 as I need to get back home for 'other duties'.

In all honesty I think they need a tee booking system for Sat\Sun AM. There's just too many people on the course. Typically we'll have to turn up at least 30 mins before we want to tee off to get in the queue.

This week I've come to the conclusion I'm not going to play weekends in the mornings as it just takes too long and I just get wound up, I know I shouldn't, but for me it's just not enjoyable.

I'm probably going to re-join my old club 'Chesfield Downs'. I my opinion Knebworth has a much nicer course to play, which is why I've stuck with it, Chesfield seems much better weekands in the morning and Comps seem to suit me more as well. I have considered Letchworth as an alternative but after speaking to a few people it seems much the same as at Knebworth. WGC is probably just that bit too far away for me to play after work in the week.

So I'll play Knebworth in the week and Chesfield at the weekends and for comps.

I'm surprised that Chesfield would be quicker than Knebworth of a weekend, additionally I played Chesfield last week and was very disappointed at how poorly kept it was, it felt like a farmers field (still !!)

Thanks for the feedback. I need to go check on the course.

Pace of play at the weekend in the mornings tends to be pretty good as it's members only, tee times are pre-booked and they have decent gaps in the slots, so pace does move along ok.

Knebworth every man and his dog shows up and they we just get launched off like jets from heathrow, no gap between groups. Soon as the group in front is clear off the next group goes.

I try to go off the back nine... There are a few roll ups that go off at set times... So I try to miss them. The front is dead by the time I get back round

How did it go rejoining Chesfield ? Knebworth is still too slow so I'm moving on now.

Decided against it in the end. When I checked it out the greens were in pretty bad shape.

I've stayed at Knebworth but only play occasionally at the weekend during the winter so at least I'm playing. During the summer I'll probably stop playing weekends and just play after work in the week when I can. Which pretty much means no competitions.

I might go take a look at Chesfield again just to play comps at the weekend. Plus they probably have some joining deals on at the moment.
