What would be a fair percentage allowance to give to a 3 ball team, playing a 4 ball team in a stableford competition?
Would the same allowance apply to a 2 ball playing a 3 ball?

The most common solutions are for the short-handed team to get assigned a "ghost" player who's scores are predetermined, or for them to simply suffer the consequences of being a player short.

Are all scores counting or 2 from 4 (say).
If all, what about the 2nd best of the 3 to count twice.

Yes forgot to mention that. 2 to score only,
We play internal comps twice a week and would be nice to establish a fair mathematical
solution

We have a number of groups (including one that plays 3 days a week). They have all settled on the following after many years of trial and error.
If all are 4 man groups - best 3 from 4
If all are 3 man groups - best 2 from 3
If a mixture of 3 and 4 - best 3 from the 4s - or 2 best and 2nd best to count twice from the 3s.

I expect there is no truly fair mathematical solution that isn't ridiculously complicated. Best bet is to just go with something simple that people will agree to.

We keep as simple as possible for our Roll Ups. If three man teams are playing alongside four man teams, it’s 100% for three man and 75% for four man. If an individual wishes to put in an Acceptable Score, they just putt out as per an individual round.
