Sat here knocking back an ale that is a new one on me....

Leffe Brune, it's roasted barley malts give the beer it's deep brown colour and a fantastic combination of sweet caramel yet bitter taste.

This 6.5% Belgian beauty is served up in a bottle that looks like a champagne bottle and indeed has the cork like a champagne bottle but only cost £1.39 for the 75cl's.

It is a great tasting ale and I fear I may sink the 6 I bought rather sharp! ;)

Any other obscure ales that forummers are keen on or can recommend?

It certainly is and after dropping another couple of points today, there is no doubt they will be gone rather quickly

By all accounts the Ref was shocking, should we have expected anything else from a Ref whos home nation have god save the queen as their national anthem?I am sure tho he will manage to redeem himself with a solid performance tomorrow Stuart!I knew we were going to struggle today when all the Polish refs disappeared off home, even they didn't want to watch Scottish football! ;) ;)

That Leffe is bloody rocket fuel mate. Drink the lot and you'll comatose on the couch.

I'm not a real ale drinker but do opt for bitter in the boozer.
Particularly like the smoothflows offered in most pubs ie Tetleys, John Smiths and Boddingtons.
As for hand pulled I do like Timothy Taylors Landlord and Tetley Cask. Considerably less potent than Leffe!

Dark Island and to be honest, anything from the Orkney Brewery.

Ah,I had this in a pub in Stonehaven in September....a great ale and it was part of several obscures that we sweeped in a pub down the harbour that had a fine array of ales.

No wonder I shot my brains out at Royal Aberdeen the next day!

If you like the leffe try to get hold of one called Kwak.

It is a similar style beer but has even larger mind-bending properties due to is asbo-inducing ABV.

Also Duvel is a nice belgian beverage, again very punchy also.

Too much alcohol content spoils the beer taste for me. 5% is plenty imo.
Not too obscure an ale but if you're in the Highlands 'Red Cuillin' from the Skye brewery is very good.

I had 2 bottles of Duvel last week....only 330ml bottles but at 8.5% it was enough to make you feel somewhat sleepy! I found it too harsh taste wise though but the Belgians can certainly brew some quality ales!

Love the Belgian style beers. Duvel, Leffe and the like. I'd rather have one of those than an IPA any day. They have a wee pub in Edinburgh called the BrauHaus which specialises in them and I don't remember much of my last visit there, which was the idea.

Not sure if they are particularly obscure but recently I've enjoyed

Innis & Gunn Original Oak Aged Beer (6.6%) and

Hog's Back Brewery TEA (Traditional English Ale) (4.2%)

All this talk of ales got me thirsty. On the way back from shopping today we popped into a local hostelry and what's on draught but the aforementioned Dark Island.

Haven't had one of these in a wee while but I'm sure as dammit gonna be having it more often. It looks like a Guinness (actually tastes a little like it too but without the heaviness) but has the consistency of an ale. Far too suppable and hit the spot nicely. Highly recommended.

I went there for a stag weekend a while back. The beer menus were enormous. Eventually I got the guys to pick their beer blind with their finger. Guess who kept getting the 9.5% banana beers! Otherwise, bliss.
