AG - Free Club MOT

There's only one reason AG would do anything for free. The off chance they can talk you into buying new gear.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. Im sure they'll try and push some new shinys! The main thing im looking to get out of it is to see if the lie of my Ping irons needs adjusting.

I'm sure an authorised Ping retailer would be able to sort you out and i'd much prefer a Ping expert loose on my clubs than AG.

Sounds like you've already made your mind up. For what its worth my local AG are excellent, like I said I have my clubs checked at the start of each season, not once have they tried to sell me something I don't need or want. Its good customer service, and thats why I'm happy to spend money there when I do need something.

My playing partner went down to get his lie and loft checked after 3 years of ownership and came back with a new set of m2 tours. Said he wasn't hitting them much better than his own on the trackman. Didn't make any difference to his scores.

I suppose the question is why did he buy them then? Did they hold a gun to his head?

I love the AG bashing that goes on. Some shops are better than others, it depends where you go and what staff. At my local one there are two members of staff I trust, the others I wouldn't take advice from. So much so that when thinking about going in I see who's car is parked out front.

In a perfect world I would go to the Mizuno performance centre for anything to do with my irons (1 hour drive away) or Ping for my woods (don't think there is a centre in Scotland). Next season I intend to get new irons and that's worth the drive up but for little things I am more than happy to get one of these two guys to deal with it for me.

There's also the benefit of having all the major clubs stocked. Again, I would rather go to my pro but really I can only do that if I want Titleist (as so many club pros seem to be these days).

AG are great if you get one with good staff. The only down side for me is there are two in my area, the one with a range isn't staffed well in my opinion while the one I prefer only has nets.

I always leave feeling like I've been on a used car forecourt. Even had a guy lie to me about the stats I could see on the screen once.

They probably didn't do that, but they may have led him to believe that his current clubs were more unsuitable for his swing that is actually true. Like when you go to Kwik-Fit and the guy tells you that the exhaust/tyre can't be repaired.

MOTs in garages are often discounted for a reason - great selling opportunities. Same in AG.

I had an MOT guy tell me by brake pads were 90% worn and needed replaced. I didn't believe him, so declined and drove another 10000 miles on them, by which time a service at a different garage revealed they were only 50% worn. Magical regenerating pads, obviously.
