Hi to all,
As a completely new beginner to golf(had half a dozen lessons)what advice would you give to me also what are your thoughts on golf ranges ?
All replies appreciated.
Thanks.

With winter coming on you'll probably spend more time on the range than on the course. Just be careful you are practising in a constructive way - don't bash hundreds of balls and ingrain your bad habits. I'd keep having the odd lesson to make sure you're on the right track. If you haven't joined a club my advice woud be to find somewhere you can get out whenever you can - pay-and-play, par 3 or whatever. You may get frustrated with your scores, but it reminds you of what the game is all about and of the variety of shots you need.
I think that the range is good - but only with the right advice.
Best of luck - hope you enjoy whatever golf you play over the winter.

When i go to the range about 3 times a week All i do is practice drills. ie david leadbetter tips on correcting faults etc . i dont often focus on where the ball goes too much. i just practice the drills for a good few balls then try hit the shots.

Always go to the range to improve an area of you game( that is the main ide of ranges after all). if i'm hitting the ball really well i ignore my swing and practice shortgame shots. like chipping into the net or go use the putting greens if available. I normally use a six iron for about 70balls get my swing right then hit some wedges and the drives and long irons. i play about with ball position sometimes too .

At the range i try ridiculous stuff to like hitting shots cross legged and on one foot. if you can hit a ball doing this it makes it easier to do when standing properly. hope you understand.

OOhh, this is right up my street.

At my first club, everyone said, "you'll never learn to play well at a range". I think I proved them wrong by making single figures NEVER (yes, never!) practicing on a practice ground.

Learn to use the mat to your advantage...set up a T (not a tee!) with clubs/shafts, whatever, to ingrain your alignment. Avoid hitting too many drivers (sorry guys!!!) and work hard on the direction and strike of your short irons, mainly practicing off the mat (yes, not the tee) and reserving 3 woods/drivers more for the end.

I saw a guy hit 95/100 drivers with a HUGE slice today. At the end of his practice he turned to his mate and said "right, well sorted for my game tomorrow."

A***hole. All he's done is ingrained his awful swing and a slice so bad I'd say he couldn't even get round a course. What is wrong with these fools - every shot counts, do 2 or 3 practice swings/drills for every ball, and it's the least painful way to improve your game.

Novel over. Good luck. PM me anytime for any more (pompous!) ideas/advice.

yes dave
i dont use a tee unless using a driver. although i use a high tee to hit an iron off for ball striking drills.

good advice given dave.

I heard that sometimes that makes it worse(aiming further left). Dont ask me how Im sure david leadbetter said it. But fair play if your hitting the ball in a certain way you need to play that way swing changes are for the driving range.

If my slice is bad, I tend to snap the shaft in two, flounce out like a big girl, go home and take it out on my cat.

hahahahaha I think slicing is part mental, when I just think of the ball on the tee and nothing else spesh my swing I hit straight, if there is a slight thought of slice then slice it will be.
