Well compare him with say Gary Oldman or Tom Hardy or Michael Fassbender or Ed Norton or Philip Seymour Hoffman (RIP), when you watch those guys in films you rarely see the actor, just the character because they get so absorbed into the role in terms of appearance, movement, speech etc whereas Hanks is always the same looking, moving and speaking imo. Even when you listen to Woody from Toy Story (I have kids) its just Tom Hanks, too familiar or something.

Completely different each time in films like Philadelphia/Forrest Gump/Road to Perdition/Big etc
You could probably apply your comment to pretty much any actor if you really wanted to.
