Nope sorry, totally disagree.

Completely different each time in films like Philadelphia/Forrest Gump/Road to Perdition/Big etc

You could probably apply your comment to pretty much any actor if you really wanted to.
 
Will Farrell & Jim Carey would be in room 101. Keanu Reeves has also got some dire stuff to his name. Depp can be good or awful.

Equally, it would appear that certain actors often work for rubbish directors. Reeves probably more than most. Cage has done the odd good movie but, like Reeves, has had the odd rubbish director.

Hanks, for me, has been consistently good with only the odd half blip. I think Saving Private Ryan was an excellent film. Road to Perdition was a good film but could have been done in half the time, and Newman was excellent in that.
