67 year old is going to spend 8 months in prison for jamming speed cameras. He did wrong and was caught but could there have been a better way of punishing him, big fine or community service or both? The whole punishment fits the crime thing seems to be in some disarray. Burglars and serial car thieves seem to avoid custodial sentences but this bloke gets 8 months when he has not actually inflicted harm or loss on anybody. Then there is the question of prison overcrowding.

The guy was an arrogant idiot though. Also, you don't need a jammer if you don't speed. Serial offender, lock him up. Works for me.

How do they estimate he cost in lost fines revenue?

The system sometimes cares more about money than people.

He didn't get put away for speeding, he got the custodial sentence for attempting to pervert the course of justice. It was his contempt for the rule of law that got him the sentence.

Exactly right. This bloke showed complete contempt for the speed limits, which are in place for everyone's safety, and was giving the camera the finger as he drove past. The only problem I have with 8 months is that it isn't long enough.

Do you really think this is worse than burglary?

Especially after recent events with the death of a burglar.
And all the after effects of that case.

This guy is out of order ! but to put him in jail when drug dealers, addicts ,burglars and crims in general don’t get jailed because of overcrowding seems harsh .

Its all about money for the treasury ,cross them you are screwed.

That’s like trying to compare apples and oranges. They’re just different.

Burglary is a crime against society, but what he tried to do is a crime against society’s structure. Does he deserve to go to jail for it? In my opinion, yes.

Equally, I also think burglars should be jailed, along with dealers.

As for, its all about money; it’ll cost more to jail him than it would to give him a non-custodial sentence.

Its a joke really. Are they going to lock up every Muppet with a cd hanging from their rear view mirror in the belief it will blind a speed camera.

Big fine was all that was needed.

In general I think the UK is too soft on crime.

Justice system's behind the times. Jail has ceased to be a moral deterrent. Actions worthy of imprisonment should carry a massive fine. Or he/they should be hit with a sentence and charged with the cost of keeping him/them in jail. The problem then is the rich wrongdoers can afford to pay so some form of constraint on the lives has to be part of the 'price' otherwise there's no pain. The Police and CPS should hit the criminal with the cost of solving the crime.

This guy was an idiot and tried to lie and duck out of being punished. PCoJ is considered serious but since he and many others couldn't give stuff about 'truth' he's got what's deserved.

The general public know little about PCoJ.

Recent Glasgow case where the jury foreperson who took a £3k. bribe to free some low life drug dealers.
She is now serving 8 years in prison.

Also the severity of the punishments dished out in cases where couples take each others speeding penalty points to avoid a ban.

Interesting to see peoples responses here. It's common for people to think speeding is not really a crime and not worth punishing. It's sad that many drivers overlook how dangerous they can be, usually to completely innocent third parties.

How many people do burglars or thieves kill compared to speeding drivers or drunk drivers?
The stats would probably show the driving offences are more dangerous - maybe we should look up speeders and rink drivers, and just give points to burglars and thieves?!

Good post, interesting question to finish with!

As a 'failed pedestrian,' and I was on the pavement, I'm more than happy to see custodial sentences for those that speed where pedestrians are present.

He was an arrogant prat with an attitude problem towards the law & speed limits. The link below is to another motorist, Nigel Sweeting, with an attitude problem towards his fellow motorists; it makes interesting reading, and quite frightening reading if you are a motorcyclist.

The speed camera prat can now consider his actions at his leisure, as can Nigel Sweeting; David Evans will never have that luxury again, and his family had their lives turned upside down. Anything that takes people like that off our roads can only be a good thing in my opinion; if it's jail time then so be it.

He wasn’t jailed for being a motorist though was he?
He was jailed for PCOJ, that’s completely different.
Dont get me wrong speeding is bad but not as bad as an old pensioner waking up to some thug in her bedroom.
IMHO I would jail them all , build more prisons.

I'm not sure I actually said he was jailed for being a motorist  but in effect he was.

He was jailed for PCoJ because of his actions as a motorist. If he hadn't been exceeding the speed limit & giving cameras the finger he wouldn't need to have been perverting the course of justice. So whilst he was found guilty of PCoJ, it was his attitude & actions as a motorist that started him down the road to that outcome.
