I've managed to get my hands on a 4 ball voucher for the belfry (unwanted raffle prize to a non-golfer).

I was hoping it was going to be for the ryder cup course but it turns out it is for the PGA national course.

Has anyone here played the PGA national course and how did they find it? Are you able to enjoy the course enough to compensate not playing the brabazon and attempting (failing) to do a 'Seve' at the 10th?

I'm looking to book a date in november so i'm hoping the weather holds up and there isn't too much rain to spoil the day.

Daveyboy and Hovis are both members off it and I am sure they will give you the full sp. The PGA is a very good course and I am sure you will enjoy it.

I personally found the PGA national more of a test than the Brabazon and would have no qualms in playing it.

Played it many years ago and hated it. Played Saturday and enjoyed it. Some tough holes but a fair test. Decent greens, but the bunkers were tough - maybe because they were soggy but I couldn't get any thing close out of them, and I'm a decent bunker player.

Played the Belfry 2 or 3 months back on a two day package deal. We were due to play the PGA National and Derby, but on the day we upgraded and played the Brab instead of the Derby.

Anyway back to the PGA National. There were 15 of us in my group and each of us felt that the PGA National was actually a more enjoyable course than the Brabazon. The Brab has it's charms and it is still a great course to play, but honestly you are not missing much in my opinion by playing the PGA National.

really??? Im shocked you say that. The Brab is a far bigger challenge, more mature and needs a good thinker as well as a strong all round game to mater it. Its head and shoulders above the the PGA in my opinion. The PGA is fine and an OK track but not in the same league.... I found to be somewhat half cooked.... If the OP plays the PGA he should avoid wandering over to the Brabazon 18 or looking at the 10th as he will only then be gutted he didnt play it instead... Personally try and arrange a night over and play both of them....( a night in the Belair used to be fun!!) :) Make sure they are in good nick of course as they get tons of traffic and then report back. I think my money is on the Brabazon being the superlative track. That said I have played it twice and once it was in poor nick however but you can still see and experience its quality. Providing its not raining a lot or over used its one of the good ones in the UK.

The PGA seems to be like marmite to most golfers, personally its my favourite course and as good as the Brab is I would be quite happy to play the PGA over it. The greens are normally in great condition and can be very challenging if you find the wrong section. As said, the bunkers can be deadly especially after rain, As for the rough well if you find it then its advisable to play a provisional. I was playing on the Derby Saturday and it was a joy to see the guys from britains best putter comp searching in the knee high rough for there stray tee shots. I felt like telling them that they had no chance

Hobbit was you playing with a middle aged guy wearing the full Ricky Fowler orange gear on Sat in the Britain's best putter comp? I saw him in the rough next to the Derby course so he must have hit a vicious duck hook to be looking where he was.

I played the both and preferred the PGA to the brabazon but it always comes down to your own taste

Yeah, maybe it was the conditions on the day or maybe it just suits my game, but even as a 21 handicapper I found the brab straight forward to play. I came off the PGA and felt like I'd been given a lesson on how tough golf can be.

I have played all the courses at the Belfry. The Derby was atrocious and I hated it but I thought the PGA was a good course and enjoyed it. The Brabazon has some iconic holes but I thought it also had some bland and uninteresting patches too. I would play the PGA again and for free what isn't to like.

Of course, you could chance your arm and call the Belfry up and explain you have a voucher and see if you can pay a supplement to upgrade to the Brabazon

What didn't you like about the Derby and made it atrocious? There are far worse courses around...
