3 iron shaft length and cut??

I want to put a new shaft in my 3 iron, i have a new 40.5 inch shaft, and 3 iron shaft is 39.5? could i just cut 1 inch off to the 40,5 to make it 39.5 would this effect the shaft stiffness or anything?

If you cut it from the butt end it will be usable. Most shafts are supplied uncut needing trimming anyway.
