2025 knock out matches - tales of death or glory

Foursomes knockout this afternoon;

My pair was giving 5 shots. We shot +5 through 16, with a double, and we lost 3&2. We had 12 pars! I believe if we’d have made 16 pars, we’d have only been all square.

We’re off 4 & 5 so a bit of a tall ask. And hardly any birdies out there on club championship pin locations. Bit of a shame, I thought we played well.

Only real frustration was not having the honour on a single hole that I teed off on.

Always a valid point, but then the forum would be really boring. Suggest you don’t buy the cap. Save up for a putting lesson?

Sounds like it’s your life thats boring, not the forum..

You spent your Saturday evening being obnoxiously insulting to strangers on the internet, reading threads you’ve “no interest in”, then commenting insultingly, then later on that evening, checking back in to comment again

Great Saturday night lads!

Great Saturday night lads!
You’ve got me. I’m away to consider my life choices. When I look back in a few years I’ll be grateful that you put me back on the right track.

Until I reach that point of self awareness I’ll check in on the forum occasionally, if ok with you of course? It’s a great antidote to my occasional insomnia

Not sure if this is the right place for this but it is a KO match, all be it a team one, and I just want to get it off my chest and then move on with my life.

Team KO, individual matchplay, 7-a-side, we were playing away at Derby GC, a tight course with small greens.

I was giving 6 shots to my opponent.

Hole 1, par 4, 360 yards, no shot
I hit a decent drive, opponent slightly right and under trees from where he had to play a low one out, some way short of the green, I hit a nice 8 iron to the green but rolled towards the back and flag at the front. Opponent puts his on the green for three, also towards the back, I hit what I thought was a good put but it broke the opposite way to what I expected, still had a four footer for the win but pulled it poorly and ended with a half.

Hole 2, par 3, 160 yards, no shot
I hit a decent 6 iron that carried the front left bunker and looked as though it would be okay, opponent short right. Got down there and my ball was nowhere to be seen, it must have kicked hard on landing and into the cabbage behind the green, lost ball and hole, 1 down.

Hole 3, par 4, 437 yards, shot hole
Opponent sliced his into the trees, I hit a nice 2 wood down the middle, opponent clattered trees again, I opted for an easy 6 for position as I couldn't reach the green, but shanked it into the same spot as my opponent. he chipped forward, I had a gap but caught a tree and went across the other side of the fairway and then followed that up with a few further very bad shots and conceded the hole, 2 down

Hole 4, 182 yards, no shot
opponent hits a lovely ball, pin high and about 15 feet away, I'm feeling a bit rattled and smother my shot, next shot to front fringe and miss the putt on, opponent puts up to gimme and wins the hole, 3 down

Hole 5, par 4, 381 yards into wind, shot hole
Both hit decent shots, opponent then hits a great shot onto the green almost 200 yards away, I come up short, fat a chip and lose to a 4 net 3, 4 down and reeling!

Hole 6, par 4, 423 yards, shot hole
Opponent hits a poor one but it runs a long way, mine is okay, opponent pulls to left rough, my 5 wood is about 20 yards short, opponent plays a nice pitch to the green and we both make fives but his is net four, 5 down 😮

Hole 7, par 4, 371 yards, no shot
Very tight hole with trouble right and left, wind blowing right. Opponent tops his but it bounces over a little stream and into the first cut, I play an iron for safety but it's a poor one, opponent plays down to 75 yards from the green, I go for green but hit a bad one and end up e=where opponent is, opponent plays a lovely little pitch to 2 feet for par, I don't, 6 down 😮o_O

Hole 8, par 4, 404 yards, shot hole
Opponent hits a nice one, I'm thinking I have to get something going and try for a big drive but smother it into left rough. Try to draw a 6 iron round the trees but shank it OB, drop another and shank that almost OB, concede the hole, 7 down 😮😮

Hole 9, par 5, no shot
Opponent hits a nice tee shot, I play a bad one and follow it up with three more, opponent is just left of the green in three, I'm playing five from 100 yards and shank it OB, concede the hole, 8 down 😮:cry:o_O:(

Hole 10, par 4, 363 yards, no shot
Opponent hits his worst tee shot of the day, mine is slicey but okay, opponent hits another poor one, I'm about 175 away and should have hit my 5 wood but my brain was scrambled and I chose 5 iron, made a terrible swing and was level with my opponent who had now played three, he ends up on the green for four and I'm right fringe for four, my putt misses so he has two for the hole and makes no mistake. Match lost 9 & 8 :eek::eek::eek::eek:

ALMOST, but not quite, the worst defeat possible in matchplay.
And I have a singles KO match tomorrow at my home club.....

There, I've said it and I refuse to speak any more about it.

There, I've said it and I refuse to speak any more about it.

I hope writing this down was a cathartic experience. Cheaper than lying on a therapist’s couch. The only way is up!

Following on then from yesterday's debacle, today I played in round 2 of the Seniors KO.
I began by swapping all my clubs out and having a completely different set.
Desperate for something to cling to I got there half an hour early to try and find a swing thought. Started with feet together hitting 9 irons and finally got a fix that seemed to work of addressing right out the toe and concentrating on a full follow through.

My CH = 12, opponent's = 21 so 9 shots given

Hole 1, par 4, 355 yards, no shot
Opponent won the toss but elected to go second, I hit a scuffy drive but it rolled out very well, opponent hit a poor one but next okay, I hit a great 9 iron second shot and made birdie, 1 up.

Hole 2, par 3, 167 yards, shot hole
Both made par but opponent's was for net 2, all square.

Hole 3, par 5, 504 yards, no shot
Both off the tee okay, my second found the rough and third the front left bunker, opponent was on in three, I could only bogey and opponent made par, 1 down.

Hole 4, par 4, 428 yards, shot hole
Both hit good drives, opponents second about 30 yards short, my 5 wood found the green, opponent chipped on to where I was, then three putted, I putted past the hole and had a 5 footer for the hole but scuffed the ground! Wasted opportunity, hole halved 1 down.

Hole 5, par 4, 374 yards, no shot
Both away well, I found green in reg and opponent didn't, two putts won the hole, all square.

Hole 6, par 3, 149 yards, shot hole
I was back fringe, opponent well placed in middle of the green, I putted on to 3 feet, opponent rammed his 5 feet by and missed the return, I holed for an unexpected half, all square.

Hole 7, par 4, 368 yards, shot hole
Both away okay, I hit a good second to back left of the green, opponent hits a thin one that scuttles all the way to the green, both then three putt but the shot means I lose the hole, 1 down.

Hole 8, par 5, 496 yards, no shot
Nothing spectacular and hole halved in bogey, still 1 down

Hole 9, par 4, 391 yards, no shot
Both away okay, I find the green with my second and the par is good enough to square the match. Checking the card I'm surprised to see that my front 9 was only 3 over gross 39, amazing after yesterday.

Hole 10, par 5, 532 yards, shot hole
I hit a good drive but into first cut, pull my second into the deep rough and fail to find it, opponent is in good shape after two with a shot so I concede the hole, 1 down.

Hole 11, par 3, 162 yards, no shot
Both miss the green and don't play the best chips, halved in bogey

Hole 12, par 4, 417 yards, shot hole
Opponent toes his tee shot into the pond in front of the tee, I hit a boomer straight down the middle, opponent then plays three off the tee into the hedge OB, a gift for me and back to all square.

Hole 13, par 4, 367 yards, shot hole
Both hit good drives, opponent just short with his second, I'm on the green, opponent makes 5 to my par and hole halved

Hole 14, par 4, 345 yards, no shot
I hit a terrible hook onto the 11th tee, opponent goes into right rough, I can only chip back onto fairway, opponent thins one into the ditch 75 yards short of the green, I play to the left of the green for three, opponent takes a penalty drop and is also left of the green but in four, I play an okay chip to about 6 feet, opponent then chips in!, My putt for half doesn't break like I thought it would, 1 down again.

Hole 15, par 5, 469 yards, no shot
Opponent hits a poor tee shot, mine is even worse, a skied shot that finds the pond, opponent plays his second, I take a drop and hit a decent 5 wood to leave me just over 150 yards, opponent plays his third to about 100 yards out. We both find the green with our fourth shots and two putt for bogey and a half, another escape for me but I'm still one down with three to play and my opponent has shots on the next two holes....

Hole 16, par 4, 396 yards, shot hole
Opponent hits a poor one, I hit a good one into the wind but still 180 yards out, opponent lays up, I hit 5 wood as well as I can hit it into the wind but still short of the green. Opponent plays his third to similar distance and we both take three more to get down, 5 plays 6 net 5, hole halved, 1 down 2 to play.

Hole 17, par 4, 388 yards, shot hole
Opponent annoyingly hits a good drive straight down the fairway, I hit another good one 30 yards further up, opponent is short of the green in two, I make the front, opponent putts on but is very short, I putt to three feet, opponent's putt to win looks good but just misses on the right, bogey, I hole mine for par and the half, still 1 down.

Hole 18, par 3, 201 yards over water, no shot,
Opponent decides to take the safe option of 6 iron down the side of the water, I feel my hopes could be gone as I rarley par this hole from the white tee and often do much worse. But opponent hits a stinker that still manages to go into the water hazard! I take 5 wood and hit it great to the front of the green, front flag. Opponent has to drop and then is still short of the green after three shots, he chips on for four but I lag up for a par and win the hole, all square and on to extra holes.

Hole 1, par 4, 355 yards, no shot
I feel I have to win this as the next is a shortish par 3 where my opponent has a shot.
I hit a great drive and my opponent hits a poor one, but he then makes a good recovery just short of the green, I hit 10 iron but with the following wind it goes all the way to the back of the green, opponent plays a half decent chip to about 8 or 10 feet, I putt to 4 feet. My opponent then goes for his par but it slides by leaving me a 4 footer for the match and thankfully it goes right in the middle for a win at the first extra hole.

After yesterday I just wanted to play well enough not to embarrass myself but it turned out to be a great match, I was only ever up after the first hole, but the second time round that was crucial!
(And no shanks!)

We were never in front until the final green, it was tough, as I cannot reach our par 4s in regulation so struggled giving so many shots, but stuck it out and maybe they missed to many putts but it was a very pleasing win.

Yesterday evening straight after work. Club senior KO against a 26 handicapper. I lost 2/1. Played from forward tees and max shots given/received is 18 so I am giving 18 shots, 1 a hole. I didn’t start great straight out of the car, but two bogeys against his doubles meant we were all flat. From then on he didn’t make another double until the 16th. My pars against his bogeys kept it tight but after both making a bogey on the par 3 8th I went 1 down. A birdie 2 on 10 and I was back to all square. He went 1 up on 12 after I failed to get up and down for par after he had drained a 25 foot bogey putt. He then went par par par to my par birdie par to go dormie 3. He lost 16 with his double to my par but then his bogey on 17 was enough to see out the match.

Heartbreaking to watch his approach shots barely get off the ground, land 40 yards short of the geeen and roll on. I was 1 under on the back 9 but fell further behind. 😳

I've been there before, playing a 26 handicapper in the height of summer, and watching him skull his tee shots and they roll out to full distance anyway. Soul-destroying.

This is where you need to upgrade your course. I played Royal St George’s with a 20 handicap friend. He only drives it 200 yards and couldn’t reach most of the fairways. He ran up a huge score and got very fed up.

Limiting the number of shots given, is interesting, I didn't think that was allowed, I thought you could just set maximum handicap.

I think because it is a senior only competition, setting a maximum handicap would mean lots of the seniors would not be eligible to play. For most of the other matches there is probably not much difference between the shots given. In the whole of the competition I’m probably the only player that has to give a full 18 shots. It’s just how it is and I was unlucky with the draw.

Singles knock out so far
Round 1 - Bye
Round 2 - Opponent conceded before match
Round 3 - won 2&1
Round 4 - Opponent conceded before match

I'm in the QF having played one match
My fault for leaving the booking so late but our two ties were a bye in the first round and a loss in the second round via a coin toss in the car park due to not agreeing on a date prior to the cut off. And a mate of ours did the toss, some friend!

The thrill of a toss in the car park, that's why we pay good money to enter these comps. :D
