I understand it was referred to the County union and advice was that the calculator had misled both parties but was not binding - and it was on the team with a capped handicap to be aware of the rule and they had essentially declared a handicap that was too high which is a DQ. But the result was already recorded so not 100% sure and I wasn’t party to these emails or conversations…

However what was agreed by club, and both parties, was to replay… However as no suitable date could be offered by 1 party, they gave the others a walkover.

Personally, btw, I’d be taking it on the chin. If we shake hands and agree X number of shots on the 1st tee, I’m honouring that - whether it was incorrect or not, the match was played in good faith.

Would be intrigued to understand how the county union came to this conclusion. The player(s) involved are required to declare handicaps before play, which they did accurately, its then for boths teams to agree on the calculated number of shots to be apolied based on the ToC. In any case the result had been recorded so should have stood as played regardless of any breach of rules or otherwise.
 
First round of the mixed foursomes - I'm playing again with the same partner I've had for the last three years, Gill, handicap around 17 now - you may recall we were the losing finalists in this last year. Our opponents are John (14) and Maggie (29). It is in fact a repeat of last year's semi-final, which we won, so they will be looking for revenge. We're playing on a Tuesday night as no weekend date could be agreed, but the weather is superb so it works out nicely. Giving 6 shots just as we did last time.

1st, par 3: Both ladies find separate bunkers off the tee. I warn Gill that bunkers are my kryptonite at the moment, but promptly get out of it really nicely and only about 15 feet from the flag. John doesn't get out of his, and Maggie has a failed attempt as well so they award us the hole. 1 up

2nd, par 4: My 3 wood off the tee misses the left hand tree by about 4 inches but safely finds the left side of the fairway. John hit a poor one near the ditch on the right, but Maggie plays a good recovery shot back to middle of fairway. Gill duffs our approach short on the hard ground. John plays a nice shot onto the green, I chip one up below the flag. Both sides two-putt for half.

3rd, par 3: Gill's tee shot looks good but just catches the top of the bunker - Maggie goes short and left, missing green and the bunkers. Thankfully I manage to get out of it again, leaving us at the top fringe with a steep downhill putt - John chips it further than he wanted to and leaves them with a downhiller too. Gill somehow manages to leave us 4 feet short, which we didn't think was possible, Maggie does the expected thing and runs it 6 feet past. Neither gent holes them but we leave with a half in double bogeys.

4th, par 4, shot hole: I hit a cracking drive down the middle, John hits a bit of a high, spinny one but it's fine. Gill goes right and leaves me about one yard behind a bunker - nerve-wracking but I clip it nicely with 54° and leave us about ten feet away. They are also on the green for three, but lucky for us they three-putt and let us off with a half.

5th, par 4: Gill hits a poor drive, it looks to be heading Oscar Bravo until a tree keeps it in play - it lands at the roots of another one. All I can do is punch it back up to the fairway. Our opponents play this hole pretty well for a bogey whereas we can only make double after the tee-shot trouble, so we're back to all square.

6th, par 3: Shortest hole here, and John duffs his tee shot miles short of the green. I hit approach wedge, thought I fatted it, but it finds middle of the green anyway somehow. It's another rapid downhill putt for Gill, and she leaves it 5 feet past - however we have two putts for the win so I just lag one up and take the hole with a bogey. 1 up.

7th, par 4, shot hole: Gill tops her drive this time - she's struggling at the moment. Maggie hits a decent one, so I figure I might as well just leather it with 3 wood and see how far I can get - actually works quite nicely and I rip one. Gill gets us near the green in 3, but we were always playing catch-up when they have a shot, and both teams make a 5 to draw them level. All square.

8th, par 5, shot hole: John slices his waaay left onto the practice area (he's leftie). I aim well left away from the right-hand pond for safety, it's almost too far left but just fades back in time to find the semi-rough by the fairway. Maggie chips one back, and unfortunately Gill hits a bit of a duff with our second - I hit a solid 7 wood down there, but miss the green in the right rough. John slightly duffed their third, but Maggie played a lovely approach with their 4th. Ultimately both teams make a bogey so their shot wins it for them again. 1 down.

9th, par 5: Maggie's tee shot is a little left but fine. Gill finally nails a good drive and punches the air in delight - it's been a tough front nine for her. John hits a good fairway wood, I only hit hybrid because I'm worried about anything longer running into the bunker short of the green. Gill finds the green but Maggie finds the left side bunker - however John plays a nice bunker shot that runs 10 foot past the hole. I have a long, quick left-to-right putt, and I thought I hit it perfectly - it turns and misses the hole by half an inch.. before running 10 feet down the slope as well. Both ladies narrowly miss the hole coming back up so it's halved in bogeys.

We remain 1 down at the turn. Gill hasn't had her best stuff so far, but I feel like I'm playing very well and carrying us a bit - and I know she can play well, so I'm just hoping she can find something on the back nine as I'm sure my good play won't last forever.

10th, par 3: John goes left and finds the ditch. I hit a pretty poor slicey hybrid and miss right - luckily right of the bunker as well. Our opponents make a poor decision and try and play from the ditch, which doesn't work - followed by another failed attempt. Pretty similar to the 1st as they end up just awarding us the hole, when we didn't have the easiest of chips ourselves. Lucky break to get us back level. All square.

11th, par 4, shot hole: Gill hits another good drive, so at least she's got driver working now. Maggie hits a poor one but it stays out of a ditch by a foot, and John is able to punch one down the fairway.. but it runs into the fairway bunker. The approach on this hole is severely downhill so you have to club for about 30 yards short of the green, I go with 9 iron but thin it slightly out of a scrappy lie and it finds the right hand bunker short of the green. Foursomes is a funny old format - this was the first full swing iron shot I've actually had and it's the 11th hole. Anyway, Gill hits it thin out the bunker, it goes through the green and leaves me an awful shot - sitting just out of the mulch around a tree, and the tree is impeding my backswing somewhat as well. I punch a chip with 9 iron, it runs to level with the flag on the far fringe, about 12 feet away, and I'm absolutely delighted with that. We two putt for 6 and they only make a 7 so we walk away with an eventful half.

12th, par 4, shot hole: Similar to the 8th, John hits a big slice left, and I try and play extra-safe and start it a little too far left myself, but mine fades back to just off the fairway. Maggie chips back to the fairway, and John hits his shot of the day - rips a big cutting 3 wood onto the green from 200+ yards. Fair play. Gill was going to lay-up in-between the two ditches before that - and I think we should stick to that plan (with me trying to hit a wedge closer than them and hope they three-putt, which is very plausible). But she now thinks she should go for the green, and I don't want to put doubt in her mind so I don't argue my case for very long. Sadly she doesn't get hold of it and it trickles into the first ditch. I take a drop and hit a nice wedge to the green, but I needed to get it close and I'm about 20 feet short - pretty much next to where they are for 3 net 2, except we've taken 4. They do three-putt from there as well, but of course it's good enough for the win as we can't better a 6. 1 down.

13th, par 4: We are one down but there is only one shot hole remaining in the last six holes, so I'm still feeling pretty confident. Gill hits another good drive for us, and I hit middle of the green with pitching wedge - our opponents find a bunker with their second. It takes them two more shots to get on the green, Gill lags our putt about 3 feet short, but we've got two putts for the hole from there so it's conceded. All square.

14th, par 3: Always a funny one this with club choice, but I commit to an easy 7 - catch it a little thin but it's one of those thin ones that spins nicely so it holds the back of the green. John misses the green left, and Maggie thins the chip across the green. Gill lags the putt up nicely so our 3 comfortably beats the 5 they manage. 1 up.

15th, long par 3: Generally the ladies can't reach this green as it's 200 yards uphill, but Gill makes a decent fist of it and we're only about 10 or 20 yards short of the green, Maggie's is more like 70 or 80 short. John find the front edge with his pitch - I don't hit my chip great but it runs up ok and is only about 10 feet away. They get down in two, Gill narrowly misses the par putt and leaves me two feet to hole out - I hold my nerve and get the half.

16th, par 4, shot hole: I aim left for my fade and hit it dead straight with no fade whatsoever, so we're just the wrong side of the left trees. John pulls his into the rough on the other side. Gill hits 9 iron over the trees, it's the only shot we had and she executes it perfectly - Maggie chips out of the rough so they are behind us, and then John find the left side of the green. I've got 100 yards in and I know I need to go close - my 50° is around 95 and I know the green is firm so it should release out an extra couple of yards. I struck it pefectly - it's dead on line for the pin and looks all over it, when we get up there it's only around 8 feet short of the flag. Opponents two-putt for their bogey, but unfortunately Gill pushes our putt a fraction left and we can only take a bogey as well, so we lose the shot hole. All square and this one is going down to the wire.

17th, par 4: The ladies both hit great drives, Gill is longer so John is up first for them. He leaves it a little bit short and left of the green. I have around 105 to a front pin, so I have to go past it - it's a good yardage for my AW, and I hit another class approach landing it on the green about 15 feet past the flag. My approach play with wedges today has been as good as it's ever been. Maggie decides to putt theirs from the left semi-rough and actually executes it superbly, leaving it only two feet from the hole. Gill has a quick downhill putt, it looks like she's weighted it perfectly, but it just keeps rolling... it ends up about 8 feet past the hole. I'm feeling the pressure now but I watched it roll past a minute ago and I think it's pretty straight - I hit it straight and firm and it drops! John steps up and hits a weak putt, missing their two-footer and gifting us the hole. Classic matchplay moment - if I'd have missed mine I have no doubt he would have holed his! But we go 1 up with one to play.

18th, par 4: Fresh from the high of that unexpected hole win, I promptly hit my worst shot of the day with a duffed 3 wood out to the right-hand trees. Muppet. John rips driver down there, but it fades into the left rough, which leaves them a tough pitch over a hellish bunker to an elevated green. Gill punches out of the trees to a similar spot, actually, but we're a couple of feet nearer so it's Maggie to play first. She hits it up on the green but it's thin and it runs through the back and down the hill behind the green. I chip a 50°, a bit too hard because I absolutely didn't want to duff it short, but with the height on it it just holds the back fringe thankfully. John plays a nice ship from behind the green which leaves them a 15-odd footer. Gill putts first, her putt looks good but it just breaks away at the last moment and ends up about 4 feet away. Maggie then putts, and puts a little too much on it, it catches the slope and ends up just past our ball, 5 feet away! John needs to hole the putt.. but he doesn't. They are in for 6 and we have two putts for the win. Maggie and Gill are obviously good mates, and they have a laugh about not conceding it, so me being me I figure I'm going to try and hole it, then run it a foot past. Maggie makes Gill putt as well, and she rolls it in for a half and a hard-fought victory.


A very close match, nobody was ever more than 1 in front. Gill didn't play her best on the front nine, but I'm really happy I was able to step up, and I don't think I missed a single green with a wedge which was nice. On the back nine Gill got her driver working nicely and that was enough, thankfully. Into the quarter-finals we go!

100% and I've found in over 50 years of playing golf no one is remotely interested in hearing about my games certainly not a blow by blow hole by hole account, a more realistic conversion would be:
I was playing a tie
How did it go: won 2&1
Play well: yeah good game I had a couple of birdies that was about the only difference
You been playing much: just been on holiday will get some games now
Fair enough
Any plans for the weekend, fancy a game
Yeah let's get something arranged

Fair play though to those that take the time to give us all the gory details
 
I have played the first rounds of our singles and 4bbb knockouts, in the singles I was giving a shot a hole and after a standing all square after 5, I had a run of 4 pars and a birdie to establish a good lead and finished the match off with a birdie on 15. My partner and I had an easy win in the 4bbb

Well done. Do you use different tees (men /women)? Must be tactical working out which order to play as sometimes there is a big difference between back tee and front tee.

I’ve never played mixed foursomes, too much innuendo.

Yes, on the ladies holes they tee off the reds. The first year we played it, I worked out which holes had the biggest difference in yardages overall and decided it was better to take the reds on the odd number holes. Since then, every single opponent except one has done it the same way. And the one that didn't, we beat them in 12 holes. 😂 So I guess it's pretty clear which way round is better.

The 1st hole, par 3, actually has one of the biggest differences and changes it from around 175 off the whites to 125 off reds I think, which is probably a big reason why most teams go ladies first.

Oh, I see. That is unusual.

In our one I have had a couple of opportunities to rip driver from the red tee, when my partner has knocked one OB, or on one occasion, managed an air shot. 😂
 
Played an away match for the club tonight, 4BBB. Against 2 8 handicappers, I'm off 11, partner off 15.

We were level par after 3 holes, and 3 down. Not sure I've ever played against anyone pair that have birdied the first 3 holes, the second 2 of which where par 4's over 400 yards.

They had 5 birdies altogether, and parred all the rest but one. Lost 2&1 in the end, and think it is the best I've ever played as a pair whilst losing.

Very enjoyable and friendly game. One of the chaps looked like Jiminez from the back, and Nicklaus from the front. He had 4 of their birdies, I genuinely felt I was playing prime Jiminez or Nicklaus to be honest

The Committee can dictate who plays from which hole in the Terms of the Competition, such as Ladies play odds, men play evens.

What happens in mixed golf when the stroke index / par is different for men and women? My course has 2 long par 4s which are par 5s on the women's card and a different stroke index.

In our mixed foursomes the SI is taken from the ladies card. The par is irrelevant in matchplay.

We do have a Stableford shotgun start once a year where from memory the par is the ladies par but I'm not certain.
 
My golf has been in a bad way for the past six weeks or so. However, in our foursomes 2nd round knockout yesterday we took the game to an extra hole, which we lost to a birdie. Respectable.

Today it was the second round of the fourball knockout. In thirteen holes I never scored better than a double bogey and we only halved six holes due to the efforts of my playing partner. Lost 7&5.
