Waste Management Open this week on the PGA Tour. So the 16th at Scottsdale is basically a cross between a football stadium and a rock concert. Massive crowds turn up early, get on the lash and then proceeed to shout yell, cheer, boo and mock for 12 hours.

Hitting it to 10ft is likely to get a few groans, and bogies are roundly booed.

Not the sort of tournament golf we're used to over here, but personally for a bit of a one-off, I think it's great. Good not to take the game too seriously.

Personally, I can't stand it.
And if I were a tour pro, it's one event I'd never play BECAUSE of that one hole.
But if I did, at almost $1.1m first prize, I'd take it seriously.

The pro's seem to love it for the most part. I think it's pretty fun, especially with some of the personalities that they have on the tour (Bubba for one).

Bit of a hijack, but was anyone watching the coverage last night, with the long drive chap hitting on the simulator? The guy is a monster, built like a tank, and boy does he give it a bash. 400 yards with a driver, and 236 with a seven iron.

Other interesting thing I have noticed, watching bubba, jb, etc, is that the big hitters have fast back swings too, and yet we are all told to go slow and steady to the top.

Back on post, I love the 16th hole at the tpc. It is something different. Not for every tourney, but once a year it's a bit of fun.

Didn't poults flick the crowd the finger last year?

Only saw a bit of the coverage (around the time Gary Woodland's ball landed between two bins on the 9th)...Was the long drive bloke in the Sky Studio on the simulator? Would have been cool to see.

And yes, I've noticed that the big hitters have massively quick back swings for the most part.

Yes he was on the sim. He was also trying to coach Dennis Pugh to hit it longer. He didn't get far, best was 239, which was why matey hit the 7i, trying to out drive it. He plays off scratch, so not a bad golfer either. He was a big unit though. Would make about 8 of me.

yeah that is big joe miller....long drive champion 2010.

what amazed me was he is actually a decent player,i thought jamie sadlowski was the only one who really played golf but joe plays off scratch.

150mph swing speed,220mph ball speed.405 yrd drive and a 7 iron that was 3/4 yrds short of dennis pugh's drive haha!!!

on topic.......

i think the 16th is brilliant and it generates so much revenue, can only be a good thing and what bubba is doing with that pink driver is great,$300 for every 300 yard + drive with a maximum of 300.i think he'll manage that this season no problem at all, they were hitting monster drives.woodland is a beast though,he was hitting some 350yrd drives for fun.you could tell they were trying to out do each other.whilst poor poulter was trying to carry a 280 yrd bunker these guys were going for the 350 yrd green.

The coverage I saw Bubba was outdriving Woodland. Not by much mind but both scary how far they hit it.

I bet Poulter felt like a little girl hitting off the tee with those boys!! Can't have been much fun for him.

Re the OP - I think it's great. Sure they said that one hole generates $6bn in revenue each year. Looks a great laugh and I would love to go and watch in there but also have a go at playing it with the full crowd. Must be immense.

Must admit that the 16th is not for me, although seeing as you always get a bunch of knob-heads shouting out stupid comments at every American tournament, probably makes sense to put the worst of them all together and away from sensible joe public enjoying the golf elsewhere!

The bit I watched yesterday the commentator was saying how it wasnt as good of an atmosphere as usual due to the amount of corporate boxes. I think it makes the event unique and as a one off tournament its good, puts a bit of pressure on the players. The amount of money it generates I cant see the players moaning when they win a part of it.

the coverage i seen it was the other way round, woodland was by bubba by about 10 yrds on a few occasions.what amazes me is gary is using a 75-80% swing and has weakened his grip to play a fade and be more accurate.i get the feeling he was going after it though as his swing looked the fastest i have ever seen it.

You must have been watching when bubba was hitting his 3 wood. From what I saw, he consistently out drove Gary.

I hate the 16th and it epitomises a lot of what is wrong with US golf fans. They think they are the centre of attention, get lagered up and rip players to shreds if they fail to make par and yet most have trouble walking and chewing the obligatory gum at the same time. You watch thenext few weeks and they'll be loads more fans making whoops and hollers on the back of it. Great - can't wait

I think the 16th is superb for both the games and the pro's. It not only adds pressure it also adds an element of humour and ribbing for the pro's who no doubt love it when they hit a good shop and hate it when they hit a bad shot. It's also makes very good TV coverage making golf which we often take too seriously more entertaining for the non golfing fraternity.

My wifes comment was that it was that it was thoroughly entertaining.

it was great last night,i can't remember the players name but he made the crowd cheer like mad during his shot from the tee and his putt...........his putt horse shoed out,the atmosphere must of been electric!!!!

The atmosphere when Mickelson, Fowler and Johnson got there was electric, the crowd were clearly waiting for lefty before leaving to the birds nest for the night.

Ex ASU and favourite son Mickleson was the worst off the tee to about 7 ft but he rolled in the 2 to rapturous applause whilst the other 2 missed. They measured the noise level after leftys putt at 120db, equivalent to standing next to a chain saw!!!
