As I recall correctly, they can do this but if you are in contract you can dispute it and can cancel your deal. Whether or not you find a better offer or not is another question. Edit to add - I see that you appear to be sorted

Possibly, the problem you have is that there’s never a good time. They may not have had money for wages, equipment etc to fund the open by paying everyone who needs paying. Entry fees won’t cover anywhere near what is required.
