I am going to be moving to Richmond, North Yorkshire in July and have to find a new golf course!
This could be easy as there is a course in Richmond itself and I took a quick trip up there and found the people very friendly.

Mortonhall is probably Edinburgh's best course. Heading out of Edinburgh you have fantastic links courses in East Lothian as have been mentioned. Gullane 3 is fantastic value.
1. Have a round with no 3 putts
2. Have a round with no double bogeys
3. Continue with at least 1 lesson a month
4. Play more links golf
5. Get to single figures. This year come down from 15.4 to 12.2.
Toughest - Dunbar in 60 mph wind. Comp was called off as unplayable after 8 holes. Playing partner got blown off his feet :-)
Best Greens - Hankley Common or for brief week between the bad weather, my home club Mortonhall

Understand about the joining fee. At Mortonhall you don't start to pay a joining fee until you are 35 and then you can pay it over 10 years. Still a lot of money I agree.
Great course but I might be biaised as a member :-)
