Hello all,

I am going to be moving to Richmond, North Yorkshire in July and have to find a new golf course!

This could be easy as there is a course in Richmond itself and I took a quick trip up there and found the people very friendly.

Does anyone have experience of the course or can recommend any other ones in the area? Probably only want to travel up to 30 mins from Richmond and I like to play all year round when possible! I wasn't able to find too much when searching.

Thanks very much,
James

James - First of all Richmond is a lovely place and a beautiful part of the country. Great move. Visit the Scone Cafe in the market square. The cherry and almond is my favourite with lemon meringue scone closely behind.

Richmond GC is a decent course. Not spectacular but my one experience was enjoyable. Wouldn't be a bad move. I haven't played Bedale but I have heard good things about it. A little further down, Ripon gets consistently good write ups and I am looking to play there later this year.

If you are willing to travel a little further, but hopefully still within the 30 minute target, Knaresborough is a belting club that has everything you could want. It is my favourite club to play at and I have been there many times. Highly recommended.

As an aside, probably just a little bit too far to join as a member, but I would recommend playing Oakdale, in Harrogate, at some point once you have settled in. Lovely course.

Hopefully others will be able to advise regarding courses on the east side of the A1 as I am not familiar with those.

James, I'd agree with the reviews on the other courses, but in all honesty I'd join Richmond, why travel? Good course, good club, good people and from there you can get to know the other courses in the area.
There's every standard and price within 30 minutes ftom Rockcliffe Hall to Wynyard to all the courses in Darlington/Catterick etc.
Richmonds green are superb and lical knowledge is needed on most of them.
Great area for Golf courses, comes down to what you want, Decent club with little travel and reasonable expense or something else, maybe the option is to pay and play a few once you've got in the area.

Paul has got it right, I was trying to be overly clever. Join Richmond. Play the surrounding courses over time and if one really grabs you then move there. Playing Richmond is not a hardship and the fact it is on your door step means you are more likely to play there.

Join Richmond.

What a gorgeous place to live, enjoy it and the Dales.

Thank you very much to all taking time to reply.

I am moving to Richmond with a bit of a heavy heart as I love being in Edinburgh, especially with the golf up here bit work dictates the move.

Good to hear positive feedback about Richmond Golf Club which I am going to join. Being so close and the fact that I love to practice means it is ideal. They also have some fantastic offers on at the moment. I am originally from Surrey and I can't believe golf can be as cheap as the offers they have on.

It sounds like there are some great courses to play some away days at as well.

I saw a picture of the 18th, looks like the stage is set for a thinned shot between the trees onto the terrace 😀

Richmond and surrounding area's are amazing, Leyburn being our favourite. We went to visit Akebar Park, Bedale whilst we were in the area a couple weeks ago and the course the looked fairly flooded.

Ripon is a cracking course as is Knaresborough but like people have said join Richmond and visit the other's.

Before committing to Richmond, try Catterick. Its only about 3 or 4 miles away. I like Richmond apart from a few holes that run side by side, and the last used to be a bit iffy - a par 3 of 150yds that you couldn't see the green for a massive oak tree and it being in a dip. I did hear, I think, that they were contemplating getting rid of the tree.

Catterick certainly used to be well worth a visit.
