I'd be fairly confident in saying that they spend a long time practising every style of shot and play, so it's all relative. So, as per the OP, the bunker should be considered an obstacle, but is often the preferred option.

Very much like me, I played my first game since H4H last Monday. Had a good round by my standards and thoroughly enjoyed it.
