I really would avoid starter sets, particularly in the begining. Give it a while then try them out before buying. The clubs I like, you may hate and not get on with.
I am not so surprised:

two weeks ago I couldn't hit with my driver for toffee, if I could hit it straight, it would go about as far as my 3W. I then brought a £90 driver from Benross (I did try others like Yonex) and found I could add at least 40 yards to every drive, the difference between the longest differences is...
No this isn't in the wrong section, he is actually a keen golfer.
Anyway for those in the Milton Keynes area, Darren will be appearing at the relaunch of the Three Locks course on 4th July.
They appear to have Marmite looks, personally I think they look great, would love to give these a go, trouble is I would probably try them and love the play. I would then need to figure out a way of telling the other half I need yet another set of irons :(
Just set my record today with my new Benross driver, bit of a freak shot I admit but 296 yards, now just to get them all that long and going straight :)
Previous record with my untrustworthy Slazenger was 190 yards, on a side note, I notice all the driver manufacturers are now making drivers...
Nice to see you read my post Keef :)
The reality as I see it is there are a range of clubs on the market today, starting with some very forgiving clubs which are great for beginners, ending with some top end clubs aimed at the pros. If a pro used some of these simple clubs they would not play...
I had a fitting recently and tried several clubs and ended up getting a Benross 3 Max. It really is about finding one that suits you personally. Your local club will probably give you a fitting for free and let you try out several clubs with a PGA pro who will watch your swing and listen to what...
I never use a driver but tee off with a 3 wood instead. I would really strongly suggest that you go to your local club and ask them for a fitting, explain what you want and they will advise you accordingly. As a beginner (like myself) you might struggle with even the most forgiving of drivers.
I am soon to be in the same boat. Just need to identify the right club with a course that is well suited to me. Hope you enjoy the club and get that handicap down nicely.
