Affordable membership? Plus fees proportionate to quality?

Thanks for all your replies! Oddsocks - I bumped into a guy yesterday at Lingfield who said that he was a member at Farleigh and rated it highly. Fancy a game there soon? Bletchingley looks very interesting because it's both affordable AND close by. It's only a few miles away and I can get...

Why is EGU membership more expensive for women?

Unless I've made a mistake with my maths somewhere? Almost every club website I've looked at today says: £7.25 male EGU membership £10.75 female EGU membership to include £2.50 LGU membership £10.75 - £2.50 = £8.25 - so £1 more than men Have I missed something?

Affordable membership? Plus fees proportionate to quality?

Hello, I haven't posted on here in a little while, nor have I really played golf much the past 9 months owing to the delights of parenthood. But now that it's a bit easier to look after the growing sprog I'm finding a bit more time to play and practice - and want to join a club. This is a bit...

What are the business costs for a bucket of balls?

Thanks for your replies. I'm sad to say that the range involved - as I understand it - was only turning over £1-2k per month. That's revenue, not profit. The pro running it told me that the rent was £1k but was put up to £2k when the club bought it. He's a good guy but it's just an awkward...

What are the business costs for a bucket of balls?

Hadn't thought about ball loss and theft - good point. It's still the very early days of an idea, but I'd like to share it with you. The local driving range to me has (had) a great pro working there; a really genuinely nice guy who bent over backwards for you. Sadly, he's been pushed onto...

What are the business costs for a bucket of balls?

This is a genuine question, relating to an idea I've been mulling over for some time. I just wondered what the business costs were for someone operating a driving range, for a bucket of (say 100) balls, above and beyond the already existing costs they occur. In other words: Let's say Peter...

Avoiding the obvious - is it a mental issue?

Ah - taking the driver. Now that's a recipe for disaster. The gulley/ridge running 50 yards short of the green is in-play with a driver - it'd be 20% chance of clearing it and 80% chance of running into it. The best approach is a hybrid or 3 wood, then a 7 or 9 into the green IMHO. Or...

    Was I reasonable...?

The club I'm at doesn't have a clubhouse - it's just a rock-up-and-play kind of place with a starters hut. It's good value as a result and very close to my house, but consequently does attract people taking the game up for the first time, who pay their green fees and hack the place to pieces...

Avoiding the obvious - is it a mental issue?

All very good feedback, thanks everyone for your thoughts. Sometimes the more you try and avoid something you more you end up hitting into it.

Avoiding the obvious - is it a mental issue?

There was no-one behind me and because I didn't want to concede defeat to a bloody lake! I'm damned well going to get a tee shot to stick to the fairway and not enter the lake even if it means running out of balls!

    Was I reasonable...?

Yes, but today was miserable weather and I was out there getting wet! I had no issue with their pace of play prior to catching up with them; it was the fact the slowed down which caught me unawares.

    Was I reasonable...?

15, but probably going to head in the wrong direction as we have a little'un on the way and as of August much less time to play! But handicap isn't relevant to the issue in question. I absolutely 100% recognise that I should have played through and taken them up on their offer. The point of my...

    Was I reasonable...?

I'm afraid that's a flawed analogy. If I was getting shunted up the backside (proverbially, not literally) by a scratch golfer I would play them through. In any event, I wouldn't be concerned because I know that I support a good pace of play and do everything possibly to be prompt in playing...

    Was I reasonable...?

Sorry - crossed wires! I was referring to me doing all the things I accused them of not doing (e.g. I ensure I have got my driver/3 wood/etc out before the next tee shot, I position my bag to make a quick getaway and so on).

    Was I reasonable...?

I don't mean to come across as arrogant, because I am not. The simple truth - which might sting - is that golf to young people is more of a sport whereas golf to older players is more of a pasttime. You can argue all you like about that, but speak to anyone under 20 playing now and they'll tell...
