Guvnor2013
Medal Winner
So, the fitting day was on Wednesday (6th April) and, despite a fire alarm evacuation at the Celtic Manor Hotel during breakfast, I managed to tip-up only a couple of minutes late (25 minutes standing around waiting to be let back in to the Hotel plays havoc with your punctuality). One of the other players selected (Dan) was in the throes of his fitting when I got there so I was video interviewed by Jezz from GM about my goals, golf and other background stuff whilst waiting.
My fitting soon followed and, whilst this was my first proper fitting, I still found it a lot more in-depth/comprehensive that I had imagined. I did struggle with the 'how does this shaft feel in comparison to the last one?' questions as there were very subtle differences that I failed to notice really. I based a lot of the decisions on how well I'd hit them I suppose but we got there in the end. It was also a bit nerve wracking to be honest, to be hitting balls in front of half a dozen experts but everyone was very supportive and hearing 'great shot' occasionally was encouraging.
Ultimately, I got 4-PW in the MP25, 2 x S5 wedges (with the blue finish), the JPX-EZ driver / 3W / 5W and the 4hybrid (these will be arriving in the next week or two, as they have to be forged in Hiroshima and assembled in Scotland). I was also given more JPX balls than you can shake a stick at, Mizuno clothing so I can look the part and lunch.
There was more filming and photography done in the afternoon then a brief explanation of what the future holds. The other two players selected seem like good guys and decent players and, without wishing to pre-empt the GM article, we all seem pretty confident of achieving our goals.
I'm not sure when all the material will be published / uploaded to the web but as a GM subscriber, I'll let you all know when I see it. The guys at my golf club are all very interested in what I've been up to and there's hardly a hint of jealousy on a daily basis, hardly any at all.
